WILLIAMSTOWN, MA -- The Ephs handily won their home opener on Sunday in the Samuelson-Muir pool defeating Springfield College 185-89. Williams posted the fastest time in every individual and relay swimming event while also racking up the highest scores on the diving boards.
The team's record improves to 2-0 after a successful opening weekend. Senior captain Grant Johnson said about today's meet, "We were trying to get out there and focus on our own swims, and everybody did a good job--especially considering the back-to-back meets we had this weekend."
Some highlights from the day include the 200 freestyle, where Lucca Delcompare won the event in 1:45.75 and Clayton Morikawa came in second at 1:47.39. It's always bad news for the competition when Williams first-years stack the top of the scoring, especially in an event like the 200 freestyle that has relay implications. Recall that the 800 freestyle relay was the only relay event not won by Williams at the 2016 NESCAC Championships.
In both his events, the 100 backstroke and 100 butterfly, Tim Kostolansky hit the pad first. Kostolansky returned to his strong events today after dabbling in the 400 IM yesterday at Union College.
Fellow New Jersey native Ben Lin turned in another series of good swims, including in the 200 backstroke. His time of 1:50.74 in that event missed the NCAA 'B' cut by one-tenth of a second. In addition, Lin competed well on some relays, like in the 400 medley relay where his butterfly split broke the 50 second barrier.
One of the closest races of the day was between two Ephs in the 500 freestyle. A late push from Grant Johnson was held off by first year Andrew Trunsky, who refused to succumb to the big tactician. Trunsky finished less than half a second ahead of Johnson with a final time of 4:47.14.
And in the final individual event of the day, the 200 IM, two Eph sophomores broke the two-minute mark. Zach Ottati bested classmate Kenny Liu by less than a tenth of a second. Clayton Morikawa wasn't far behind either.
The Ephs resume their competitive schedule after the Thanksgiving break. On December 3 they square off with Boston College in another home meet.
