WILLIAMSTOWN, MA -- The Eagles of Boston College visited the Muir-Samuelson Pool today as the only Division I competition on Williams' schedule this year. The Eagles grabbed a convincing victory over the Ephs, but Kuster's men turned in some times that will make the rest of the NESCAC take notice.
In the freestyle events that started the day, the 1000 and 200 yard events, a number of Ephs got under significant barriers. In the 1000, first-year Andrew Trunsky led a trio under the 10-minute mark with a time of 9:49.24. In the 200 distance, senior captain Grant Johnson improved on his season best, clocking a 1:44.00, while Will Burford and Zach Ottati finished impressively at 1:46.86 and 1:47.50, respectively.
Boston College's Anthony Richardson took the victory in the 1000 freestyle, which was the beginning of an impressive day from him, while Eagles' Keating Mosher was the fastest man in the 200.
Ephs Colin Hogan and Timothy Kostalansky had several head-on races, the first of which was the 100 backstroke. Hogan bested Kostolansky in this shorter race, but later on Kostolansky would strike back and finish ahead of Hogan in the 200 backstroke. The last of their races came in the 200 IM, where again Kostolansky was the fastest Williams finisher while Hogan trailed behind both him and Ottati; all three managed to get under the 2-minute barrier in the IM race.
Boston College continued to grab victories in those races and others, including the 100 breaststroke. But sophomore Jack Melnick was able to turn in a season best time of 58.56, and led the way for first-year Clayton Morikawa who finished at 59.36. Morikawa returned in the 200 breaststroke race later in the program, and improved a time that was already ranked first in the NESCAC.
Lucca Delcompare had an impressive showing in the 200 butterfly, clocking in at 1:54.35. He finished second in the race to Taylor Cortens of Boston College. Delcompare was also the fastest Williams finisher in the 100 butterfly distance at 52.90.
Some strong freestyle swims ended the day, just as they began it, and there were familiar culprits. Johnson took second place in the 100 freestyle in 47.61, followed by Curtis Maher and Matt Zappe in 48.38 and 48.53, respectively. Trunsky and Burford had strong swims in the 500 distance, but the fastest Eph in that event was Dan Needham in 4:48.89. Kenny Liu also finished in 4:52.54.
While Boston College dominated the scoreboard, coach Kuster was pleased with the total team effort. "There were some good swims today, including some people getting their hand on the wall in close swims," he said. "My biggest takeaway, though, is that everybody showed up to race, whether it was in the middle or the outside lanes. That's a strong foundation that we can build off of."
The Ephs return to action next weekend at Wesleyan University in a four-team meet including WPI and Tufts.
