Williams Overcomes Wesleyan, Blanks Conn.

Video Highlights vs. Wesleyan

WILLIAMSTOWN, MA –
The Ephs continued their success at home on Sunday, beginning with a victory over #8 Wesleyan University and ending with a 5-0 win over Connecticut College. Both matches were played indoors until determination at 5 points.

Against Wesleyan, Juli Raventos '18 secured a singles victory 6-4, 6-4 to clinch with a final score of 5-1. Alex Stone '16 won the final match against Connecticut. These wins bring Williams to 5-0 at home and 11-2 on the year.

"We showed more confidence in our aggressive games today," said head coach Alison Swain following the second victory of the day, "and that helped us build an advantage in both matches."

The Ephs put forward the same doubles lineup against Wesleyan that finished 3-0 against Middlebury on Saturday, this time winning 2 of 3. Julia Cancio '18 and Hannah Atkinson '17 as well as Mia Gancayco '18 and Maya Hart '16 led throughout their victories, finishing 8-3 and 8-2, respectively. Juli Raventos '18 and Linda Shin '17 battled through tie breakers before falling 9-8(7-5) to Eudice Chong and Aashli Budhiraja.

Cancio led things off in singles with a 6-0, 6-2 win. First-year Leah Bush followed with a victory of her own at 6-4, 6-4 to bring the Ephs within one win of clinching. Following the win by Raventos, singles matches played by Gancayco, Shin, and Atkinson were left unfinished in the 5-1 victory.

In their second match of the day, Williams blanked Connecticut College 5-0 behind undefeated doubles and singles wins by Giulia McDonnell Nieto del Rio '18 and Alex Stone '16.

Leah Bush and McDonnell Nieto del Rio got things started by shutting out their Conn. opponents 8-0. Gancayco and Hart followed up with an 8-2 win, while Stone and Carmen Saab '19 ended up with an 8-3 win.

Riding the 3-0 lead into singles, Williams only needed two wins to clinch. McDonnel Nieto del Rio overcame her opponent Emily Migliorini 6-1, 6-2, while Stone followed up with a win against senior Charlotte Marcoux to end the day. Atkinson and Korina Neveux '19 were leading in their respective matches when action was halted. Saab and Hart did not play their scheduled singles matches.

"I thought we played focused and determined tennis from start to finish today," said Swain.

Sunday marks the end of a Senior Weekend that featured three matches against conference opponents. The final home meet of the year will come on April 15th when the Ephs square off against MIT. They will play arch rival Amherst College away on April 16th. In the fall portion of the season, the Ephs secured the first ever 9-0 shut-out of Amherst, and have won the last five matchups of the series.
