6-3 Win Over Amherst Keeps Ephs Undefeated in Conference

AMHERST, MA – The Ephs secured their second win over rival Amherst this year with a 6-3 win away on Saturday. When the teams competed in October, Williams came out on top 9-0. The all-time series score is now 39-36 in favor of Amherst, though the Ephs have now won the last six match-ups.

"I'm really proud of the team for competing so well today," said head coach Alison Swain. "Amherst is always a tough match and we played as a team to get the win today."

Doubles finished 2-1 on the day, though things started with an 8-2 loss in the third doubles slot. In that match, Mia Gancayco '18 and Maya Hart '16 fell to Amherst's Avery Wagman and Rebecca Pol, also a sophomore/senior team. Teams of Juli Raventos '18 and Linda Shin '17, and Julia Cancio '18 and Hannah Atkinson '17 followed up with victories at 8-4, 8-3, respectively.

Carrying the lead into singles, Leah Bush '19 got things started with a 6-3, 7-5 win. Atkinson and Cancio followed with wins of their own to clinch the match with 5 wins. Amherst fought back when sophomore Vickie Ip overcame Gancayco 6-2, 7-6(6) and Shin fell to Jackie Calla. Raventos secured a singles victory to bring the final score to 6-3.

After the win, Swain applauded the second sets of singles across the board as particularly important.

The Ephs will have two away matches next weekend when they face Bowdoin on the 23rd and Bates on the 24th.

The NESCAC Championships, held at Bates this year, will begin on May 6th.
