Box Score AMHERST, MA — The Williams College women's hockey team (9-8-2) tied Amherst College (9-5-4) 4-4 tonight. The Ephs are now 6-4-2 in the NESCAC, while Amherst has a record of 5-3-4. Senior Sara Lehman (Lexington, MA) scored a hat trick tonight, leading Williams with 19 points this season.
Play went back and forth during the first period. Freshman Williams goalie Marissa Anderson (East Falmouth, MA) stayed big in net, making 18 saves throughout the period.
Amherst took the lead early on in the second period. Freshman Eliza Laycock (Hanover, NH) scored at 1:14, assisted by junior Emma Griese (Toronto, ONT).
Amherst continued to control play in the second frame, going up 2-0 at 12:42 with a power play goal by junior Alex Toupal (New Brighton, MN). Toupal was assisted by freshman Anne Malloy (Canton, MA) and sophomore Jocelyn Hunyadi (Pepper Pike, OH).
30 seconds later, Amherst scored to go up 3-0 against the Ephs with another power play goal. Toupal scored her second goal of the night, assisted by Griese and Hunyadi once more.
Williams continued to fight to get on the board for the rest of the second period. At 15:49, junior Kearan Burke (Shrewsbury, MA) got the puck past Amherst goalie Bailey Plaman'18 (Bloomington, MN) to give the Ephs their first goal of the game. Scoring her 4th goal of the season, Burke was assisted by freshman Mia Carroll (New Canaan, CT) and sophomore Olivia Stokes (Pittsburgh, PA).
Going into the third period down 1-3, the Ephs played scrappy hockey to tie up the game against Amherst.
At 4:49 in the final frame, senior Sara Lehman (Lexington, MA) scored a power play goal to make it a one goal game.
Carrying the momentum after her goal, Lehman scored another power play goal at 10:44, tying up the game 3-3. Lehman was assisted by fellow senior Chelsey Stevenson (Tilbury, ONT).
Amherst responded to the Williams comeback, taking the lead with 5 minutes to go in the final period. Senior Caitlyn Ryan (Burlington, MA) scored an unassisted goal to make it 4-3 Amherst.
Continuing to pressure Amherst, Lehman scored her third goal of the game to tie it up 4-4 at 18:15.
In overtime play both goalies stayed tough between the pipes, making the final score a tie of 4-4.
Anderson made a total of 38 saves, while Plaman made 36.
"I thought the teams showed a lot of heart coming back from 3-0 down, and then 4-3," reflected Williams head coach Meghan Gillis.
The Ephs face off against Trinity College next Friday at Koeppel Community Sports Center. The puck drops at 7:30pm.
