Box Score LEWISTON, MAINE – The Williams College women's lacrosse team scored four consecutive goals late in the second half to take a 7-6 lead on Bates (4-3/1-3 NESCAC), but the Bobcats tied the game with just under five seconds remaining and then tallied the game winner at 2:48 of overtime to defeat Williams 8-7.
Just 35 seconds in Bates took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Kaleigh Maguire who was assisted by Melanie Mait. The Ephs evened the score with an unassisted goal by Katie Gallop at 23:39.
An unassisted tally by Suzanna Penikis at 20:43 put the Ephs up 2-1, temporarily.
Bates notched a goal at 8:56 to tie the contest at two. Allison Dewey scored for the Bobcats off a feed from Kaleigh McGuire in a man-up opportunity.
The Dewey goal was the final score of the first half and the teams went to the break tied at two.
Eph goalie Margaret Draper stopped 8 of 10 shots by the Bobcats, while Bates net minder Eliza Statile denied four of six Eph shots.
Bates collected all five of the draw controls in the first half, while Williams held a 7-4 advantage in ground balls. The Ephs committed 10 turnovers and the Bobcats had eight miscues.
The Bobcats opened the second half netting the first three goals; two unassisted by Camille Belletete. One of Belletete's goals came on a free position attempt. The third Bobcat tally came from Caroline Kerrigan with Allison Dewey being credited with an assist.
After Liv Sandford gave Bates a 6-3 lead with 16 minutes remain the Ephs sored four consecutive goals to take a 7-6 lead with 2:21 to play. The first three goals of the 4-goal run by the Ephs came on free position scores by Kara Wollmers, Jenna Chodos and Emma Tenbarge.
The go-ahead goal with 2:21 left to play came when Katie Gallop set up Jenna Chodos with a feed in close to the goal.
The Ephs, however, were unable to hold the one-goal advantage and close out the game. With time running down the Bobcats' Liv Sandford scooped up a loose ball near midfield and fired a pass ahead to Avery MacMullen who scored with just 5 seconds remaining.
The game-winning goal in overtime also came when the Bobcats turned an Eph turnover into a breakaway for Allison Dewey. Dewey collected a ground ball near midfield and raced down the field and fired a high shot into the net to claim the victory for Bates.
"We played a much better game today," said Eph head coach Chris Mason. "Our first half shots were not as well placed as they needed to be. Their goalie played well...as did Margaret Draper for us. We had a good rally to come from behind and get the lead but we didn't handle the ball long enough to close it out."
The Ephs were led in scoring by Emma Tenbarge and Jenna Chodos who both scored two goals. Allison Dewey and Camille Belletete both scored two goals to lead Bates.
Williams' goalie Margaret Draper stopped 14 of 22 Bates shots, while the Bobcats' goalie Eliza Statile stopped five of the Ephs' 12 shots.
Bates won 12 of 18 draw controls and out shot the Ephs 29-18. Williams had 21 turnovers on the day (2 in overtime), while Bates turned the ball over 18 times. Bates collected 16 ground balls to the Ephs' 14.
Next up for the Ephs is game vs. MIT in Colorado Springs, Colo., on the campus of Colorado College on Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. MST. Bates will be home on Tuesday to host Southern Maine at 5:00 p.m.
