BRUNSWICK, ME – The Ephs advanced to 14-0 on the year and 5-0 in conference with a victory over Bowdoin on Saturday, one of two away matches for Williams this weekend. The Polar Bears, meanwhile, dropped to 8-10 on the year and 3-3 in conference. The Ephs swept doubles and won five of six singles en route to the 8-1 win.
"Ups and downs are part of tennis," said Williams head coach Anik Cepeda. "We found ways to come out on top regardless of whether our games were there or not."
Senior duo Juli Raventos and Julia Cancio paired up for an 8-3 victory over Tess Trinka, the only senior on the Bowdoin team, and Izzy Essi, one of three first-years. Giulia McDonnell Nieto del Rio '18 partnered with Korina Neveux '19 to battle first-years Rachel Bercovitch and Viv Daniel to an 8-5 victory while Mia Gancayco '18 and Chloe Henderson '20 swept their opponents 8-0.
Play then shifted to singles matches with the Ephs needing just two victories to clinch the victory. Henderson, Gancayco, Cancio, and Neveux all earned their second wins of the day in straight sets. McDonnel Nieto del Rio battled through a tie-break set after losing her second for a 6-2, 4-6, 10-8 win.
"Shout out to Giulia for coming back in her third set tie-break and staying calm throughout her match," commented Cepeda. "Another shout out to Mia and Chloe who played inspired and composed tennis from start to finish."
The Polar Bears earned their one win on the day in the top singles spot as Trinka overcame Raventos 5-7, 6-4, (7). Trinka is one of just two upperclassmen on the young Bowdoin team.
The Ephs now turn to Colby in Waterville tomorrow beginning at 2:00 PM EDT. The Mules are 8-5 overall and 2-4 in the NESCAC.
