Williams Wins 15th Straight With 9-0 Victory At Colby

WATERVILLE, ME – In the second of this weekend's Maine matches, Williams Women's Tennis defeated Colby by a score of 9-0 on Sunday after overcoming Bowdoin 8-1 on Saturday. The Mules came into the day 8-5, while the Ephs advanced to 15-0 on the year with the win.

"We're grateful to have played outdoors under the sun this weekend," said Ephs head coach Anik Cepeda at the conclusion of play.

The day began with a sweep of doubles for Williams. 8th ranked duo Juli Raventos and Julia Cancio, both seniors, cruised to an 8-1 victory while teams of Giulia McDonnell Nieto del Rio '18 and Korina Neveux '19 as well as Chloe Henderson '20 and Mia Gancayco '18 both earned victories 8-2 and 8-1, respectively.

In singles, #15 Juli Raventos defeated junior Lydia Venditti in straight sets 6-2, 6-0. #23 Leah Bush '19 battled back from a 4-6 loss in her first set for the 4-6, 6-1, 10-4 victory over Colby's Gabby Venditti, also a junior. #44 Chloe Henderson '20 followed with a victory in straight sets, as did #50 Mia Gancayco '18. Neveux and McDonnell Nieto del Rio rounded out the sweep with 6-1, 6-1 wins.

"Shoud out to Leah," Cepeda said. "She stuck with it and found her game."

The undefeated Ephs will next travel to Tufts on Saturday, April 28th. Play is scheduled to begin at 9:00 AM. The 10-4 Jumbos will be playing in their first match action since overcoming Amherst on April 17th by a score of 5-4. At the time of the match, Tufts was ranked #6, while Amherst was #8. Their 5-2 record in the NESCAC is tied with Wesleyan. Only Middlebury (5-1) and Williams (6-0) hold better conference records.

Williams is riding a 33 victory streak against Tufts, dating back to 1991. Last season, they defeated the Jumbos 7-2 in a regular season matchup before meeting in the NESCAC semifinals. Williams overcame Tufts by a score of 5-0 en-route to their third straight NESCAC title.

"Looking forward to a rejuvenating week of practice heading into our final two conference matches!" said Cepeda.

After the match with Tufts, Williams will return home on Sunday, April 29th, to face off against Hamilton. The Continentals are 3-9 after a loss to Amherst today, and 0-5 in conference play.
