Women's Tennis Completes Undefeated Regular Season

MEDFORD, MA – Williams College women's tennis closed out an undefeated regular season with an 8-1 victory over Tufts on Saturday. The Ephs advanced to 16-0 on the year, 15-0 in the spring, and 7-0 in conference with the victory. Williams holds the best record in the NESCAC, with 6-1 Middlebury and 7-2 Wesleyan close behind. Only Williams (7-0), Middlebury (6-1), Wesleyan (7-2), Bowdoin (4-3), and Tufts (5-3) hold winning records within the conference. With today's loss, the Jumbos dropped to 10-5 overall. This closes out the regular season for Williams after a match against Hamilton scheduled for tomorrow at home was canceled.

"Thank you to Tufts for hosting us and taking a moment to honor all the seniors before the match," said Eph head coach Anik Cepeda. "We appreciate the gesture!"

To start the day, Williams managed a sweep in doubles. The closest doubles match came in the second slot, with senior Giulia McDonnell Nieto del Rio and junior Korina Neveux overcoming Patricia Obeid and Lauren Louks of Tufts 8-4. Seniors Juli Raventos and Julia Cancio defeated their opponents 8-2 while Mia Gancayco '18 and Chloe Henderson '20 earned an 8-1 win.

Raventos, Gancayco, and Neveux each earned their second wins of the day in straight sets. Leah Bush '19 battled back after dropping her first set for the 4-6, 6-4 (10-5) victory. Henderson dropped her second set 1-6 before winning a victory in the third 6-4, 1-6, (10-6). The only win of the day for Tufts came when Kat Wiley, a sophomore, overcame Cancio in a tight 6-3, 6-7 (4) (12-10) match.

"Today we were an inspiring group," concluded Cepeda. "We battled from start to finish and were relentless on defense, composed on offense, and did well to stay focused on our side of the court…This team has a way of coming together and staying competitive regardless of their surrounding environment."

This concludes regular season play for the Ephs. "Unfortunately our Sunday match versus Hamilton was cancelled," said Cepeda, "But we'll look forward to sunny practices and getting sharp for NESCACs!"
