CLAREMONT, CA – Befitting a match-up of archrivals the Ephs of Williams and the Mammoths of Amherst squared off in the NCAA Quarterfinals and the action at #2 and #3 doubles that was ferocious after the Ephs had claimed a convincing result at #1 doubles, 8-1.
The Eph top tandem of Juli Raventos and Julia Cancio won quickly 8-1 over Anya Iventitsky and Avery Wagman and put the Ephs up 1-0.
The Ephs went on to sweep the doubles but the contests at #2 and #3 were hotly contest. The Ephs' second doubles team of Chloe Henderson and Rachel Cross outlasted Kelsey Chen and Vickie Ip, 9-7.
Third doubles went to a tiebreaker that Williams won 9-8 (7-1) with Giulia McDonnell Nieto del Rio and Korina Neveux notching the Ephs' third point in the match.
Needing just two singles points to up their season record to 21-0 on the year senior Julia
Cancio was the first off the singles court with a win. Cancio won in straight sets over Maddie Dewire, 6-2, 6-0 at #5 singles.
Amherst got on the board when Kelsey Chen defeated Chloe Henderson in straight sets at number three, 6-2, 6-2.
Eph junior Korina Neveux recorded a win at number six over Avery Wagman 6-3, 7-5 to clinch the match and punch the Ephs' ticket into the semifinals. Eight-ranked Amherst finished the year at 12-10.
The Ephs will face host CMS (27-2) tomorrow in the semifinal round beginning at 3:00 PM PST.
The win over Amherst was the third win of the Ephs over their archrivals an extended the Eph win streak over the Mammoths to 11 and improved their all-time lead in the series to 42-39.
Williams now owns a 5-3 record versus Amherst in the NCAA Tournament.
