New Haven, CT – To round out this weekend's matches, the Ephs were up against Hamilton and Connecticut College today. Both teams are part of the NESCAC and were the first matches in conference play for the Purple Cows. The Women's squash team is currently 3-1 this season and own a 3-match win streak.
Up first against Hamilton was Sarah Willwerth (#1), Kathryn Wright (#5), and Mira Kamat (#8). Even though the team was a little tired from the previous two matches, the three Ephs polished off their opponents 3-0 using attacking shots and smart playing.
On court second was Haley Jefferson (#2), Anna Nicholson (#6), and Isabel Kelly (#9). All three players were able to play with the confidence and strength they had exhibited the day before and close out their matches in straight games as well.
Last up was Melissa Swann (#3), Quan Ng (#4), and Alex Pear (#7). Between Swann's clever tactics, Ng's untouchable nicks, and Pear's shot selection, Hamilton was not able to defeat any of the three Ephs and each secured a 3-0 win to make the final sore 9-0. Swann had to battle in the third game, but she eventually prevailed 12-10.
Co-Captain Anna Nicholson said: "Great to see the team work hard and play excellent squash against our opponents, so fun to put what we've worked on in preseason into action."
For the afternoon matches versus Connecticut College, the line-up was slightly adjusted as freshman Haley Jefferson (#2) had to sit out due to an ongoing injury. Even though their bodies were still tired after a grueling weekend, all of the women were able to seize their wins in three straight games. Kathryn Wright (#5) had a slight scare as she was 8-10 down in the third game, but with her impeccable composure and patience, she was able to come back to win the third game 15-13 and finish the match.
Junior Sarah Willerth said: "It was awesome to see everyone play their hardest this weekend. It really makes me excited to think about how far this team could go this winter. Big shout out to the freshmen for thriving in their first collegiate level matches!"
After a nice break to rest their muscles and rackets, the women's squash team will take on the Columbia Lions on Friday, December 6thin New York for the last match of the 2019 year.
