Amherst, MA – This afternoon, the Williams Women's Squash won the Little Three Championship, extending their winning streak to 21 years.
For their first match, the Purple Cows took on the Wesleyan Cardinals using a five-court system. First on court was Haley Jefferson (#2), Abby LeBlanc (#4), Co-Captain Anna Nicholson (#5), Alex Pear (#8), and Eliza Bower (#10). All five Lady Ephs displayed strong squash winning their matches in three straight games.
Carrying the undefeated momentum forward, Julia Ward (#1), Sarah Willwerth (#3), Mira Kamat (#6), Kathryn Wright (#7), and Adrienne Conza (#9) were ready to take on the cardinals. Willwerth and Wright had rather straightforward matches winning 3-0. Ward and Conza also won in three but their opponents put up a fight in the second a first game respectively. Meanwhile, Kamat saved a couple of match balls in the first game before losing the second game; however, she found her momentum and clinched the match in four games.
The last match of the day against Amherst use a three-court system. First on court was Ward (#1), Co-Captain Melissa Swann (#4), and Co-Captain Nicholson (#7). Ward participated in a five-game battle dropping the first game and winning the second one 15-13. Sadly, her Mammoth opponent had the upper hand and won the match in five. Co-Captain Swann had a tight first game winning 14-12. She then dropped the second game but made a comeback to win the match in four.
Second on court was Willwerth (#3), Ng (#5), and Wright (#9). Ng and Wright had an easier time with their Mammoth opponents winning 3-0 each. Willwerth dropped the first game before finding her rhythm and playing smart squash to win the match in four.
Last on court today was Jefferson (#2), LeBlanc (#6), and Kamat (#8). Kamat played better squash this evening winning her match 3-0. Jefferson and LeBlanc both emerged victorious despite dropping a game to their opponents. Jefferson had a close fourth game, but the freshman star was able to close the match 12-10 in the fourth. LeBlanc dropped the second game after winning her the first 12-10, but the junior had no issues fighting back and won 3-1.
On Tuesday, the Ephs will travel to Providence to take on Brown!
