Philadelphia, PA –– The Williams Women's squash team hit the road today for their first two matches of the season against Drexel (#7) and Penn. (#9), where they lost 9-0 and 8-1, respectively.
The first match of the day was against the Drexel Dragons, where a five-court system was used. Up first was Co-Captain Kathryn Wright (#4) and the first-years Theresa Kay (#2), Amanda Solecki (#5), and Nora Brant (#7). Wright tried her best to dominate the T and hit high balls, but her opponent was too good and ended the match 3-0. Making their collegiate squash debut, the three first-years emptied the butterflies in their stomach and were eager jump on court. However, all three of their Dragon opponents were locked-in and earned the 3-0 victory.
The next wave of matches were played by Co-Captain Alex Pear (#6), and juniors Quan Ng (#1), Mira Kamat (#3), and Nikita Srivastava (#8). Ng put up a tough fight against the Drexel #1 but eventually bowed out in straight games. Kamat, making her top-court debut, tried to slow down the pace, but her opponent was dominating the court. Likewise, Pear and Srivastava tried to last on courts for as long as possible, but ultimately also fell in three games. The Ephs had to default the last match as there are only 8 women.
After a quick break, the women traveled to Penn to challenge the Quakers. For the second match of the day, a three-court system was used. Up first was Kay (#2), Wright (#4), and Srivastava (#8). Kay, playing on a new glass court, could do little to shake up her Quaker opponent and lost 3-0. Wright and Srivastava put up a good fight in the first game against their respective Penn opponents but were unable to find their rhythm and also lost 3-0. Next up was Kamat (#3), Solecki (#5), and Brant (#7). Kamat had a slow start and was not able to find her rhythm and lost in three. On the other hand, Solecki and Brant both had strong first games but were not able to pick-up momentum and fell 3-0. On last was Ng (#1) and Pear (#6). Pear put up a good fight but lost in three as well. The lone win against the Quakers was earned by Ng, who outplayed the Penn #1. Ng was off to a strong start with lots of winners and found herself 2-0 up. After dropping the third game 12-10, she fought hard in the fourth and obtained the first point of the day for the Ephs. The ninth match was defaulted to the Quakers.
Tomorrow, the women's squash team will travel to Princeton to take on the Tigers at 12pm!
