Williams takes down SUNY Delhi 74-67 in first road game of the season

Delhi, NY --The Williams College Men's basketball team took down SUNY Delhi 74-67 on the road to improve to 5-0 on the season on Sunday afternoon.

The Ephs had four players score in double digits. Leading the way was Sophomore Cole Prowitt-Smith with a game-high 24 points as well as 9 rebounds, followed by junior Spencer Spivy with 16, sophomore Nate Karren with 12 points and 10 rebounds, and senior Jovan Jones with 11 points.

Williams got off to a strong start, scoring nine unanswered points after the Broncos scored on their first possession.

Ephs Coach Kevin App spoke on the defensive effort for the Ephs, "Defensively, when it was in the half court like we wanted it to be, we talked about just forcing them to take difficult shots. I thought we did that pretty well and to their credit they made some tough shots in the first half." App also commented on areas of improvement for the Ephs, "In the first half, the two issues were turnovers and offensive rebounds. I thought we gave them probably ten points on those two areas."

Williams had a strong first half shooting the ball, going 13-25 from the field and 6-12 from three point range. Prowitt-Smith and Spivy led the charge from beyond the arc, going 2-3 and 3-4 respectively.

The Ephs did a good job of taking the ball strong to the basket and drawing fouls from the Bronco defenders. Free throws were plentiful for Williams in the first half, shooting 14-17 from the line as a team.

SUNY Delhi was able to knock down a number of tough shots to stay in the game. Williams took a nine point lead into the half, 46-37.

The Ephs came out hot out of the halftime break, going on a 7-0 run and quickly increasing their lead to sixteen.

Williams continued to dominate for long periods in the second half with solid defense and patient offense. However, the Ephs went scoreless for eight of the final nine minutes of the game.

Coach App discussed the offense for the Ephs in the second half, "We just talked about playing our brand of basketball at our pace, I thought we had some phenomenal possessions but then that patience came back to hurt us as they made their run. We couldn't quite find the balance of staying aggressive but being patient for the right shot. I thought we just relaxed a little bit which forced us into some bad decisions."

The Broncos were able to get the lead down to six points with forty seconds remaining after going on a 19-0 run over eight minutes. Cole Prowitt-Smith was able to knock down free throws in the final thirty seconds to prevent the Broncos from getting within striking distance of the lead.

"I'm proud of our guys. This was just another learning curve game. This was our first road game and being on the road is never easy," finished Coach App.

The Ephs take on Worcester State on Thursday, Dec. 2 at 7pm at home in Chandler Gymnasium.
