New London, CT- In tonight's matchup against the Connecticut Camels (4-8-1, NESCAC 3-6-0), the Williams College Ephs (8-7-0, NESCAC 8-4-0) downed the Camels 4-1. The Ephs took the lead in the second period with
Sean Clarke's even strength goal and
Nick Altmann's shorted handed goal, then extended it in the third with two power play goals by
Mac Carso and Clarke.
Earlier this January, the two teams met in Lansing Chapman Rink, with the Ephs emerging victorious 3-1. Unlike the last matchup, in today's game, the Ephs had freshman
Cal Sandquist in the goal. Sandquist sports a 0.893 save percentage.
The first period started slow with neither team scoring. Both teams were able to post a decent number of shots on goals with the Ephs leading 18 to 14. The Ephs were the only team with a power play opportunity at 7:20 but were unable to convert it due to the Camels defense and goaltending. The 0-0 score spoke to Sandquist and Camel goalie Cam Fernandez consistent saves throughout the period.
The second period was filled with action. First blood was drawn at 4:16 by
Sean Clarke at even strength. Clarke was able to receive a deflected shot from
Nick Altmann and shoot it through Fernandez's pads. Not long after,
Nick Altmann extended the Ephs lead to 2 with his shorthanded goal. Assisted by
Sean Clarke, Altmann skated away, going one on one with Fernandez then slapping the goal straight through the pipes. The Camels were finally able to respond with their own goal at 12:46 when Steven Senese, assisted by Jake Vaughan and Jake Hughes, made a power play goal. After 40 minutes of play the Ephs led the game by 1.
In the third period, the Ephs extended their lead to three with two power play goals. The first was made at 4:39 when
Mac Carso, assisted by
Sean Clarke, picked up a pass from Clarke and shot it through the crowd into the goal. Not long after, the Camels were down one skater after Lukas Uhler was sent to the penalty box for tripping.
Sean Clarke, who has been a dependable player in tonight game with one goal and two assists, fed off the momentum to make his second goal at 7:09. Assisted by
Mac Carso and
Henry Muller, Clarke was ready to shoot the puck in from his teammate's pass. While the Camels struggles to connect and respond with their own goal, the Ephs continued to consistently defend and block leading to a 4-1 win against the Camels.
The Ephs will be back next week on Monday in their second matchup against the Tuft University Jumbos at 7pm EST on the road.
