Williams Drops in Four Sets to No. 24 Tufts

Williamstown, MA - Williams College (8-5, 5-3 NESCAC) took on No. 24 Tufts University (12-4, 6-1 NESCAC) at home. Tufts took the victory in four sets.

The fourth set remained extraordinarily close from start to finish, with neither team having a lead of larger than two points at any time until the very end of the set when Tufts secured four match points with a 24-20 advantage. Although the Ephs took the next two points with kills from sophomore Celia Adams and senior Christina Conforti, the Jumbos were able to close out the fourth set, and the match, with a kill from senior Maya Lightfoot.

The first set was very close in the early going as by the time the score hit 10-10, there had already been eight ties between the two teams. However, the Ephs used a 6-0 run to open up a 17-12 lead behind a quality service run from sophomore Sidra Wohlwend. The Ephs maintained their lead almost to the end of the set, but the Jumbos made a late surge to force Williams to take a timeout after their lead had shrunk to 23-22. From there, junior Marit Hoyem came up with two clutch kills in three points to close out the set 25-23 for Williams. Celia Adams was also central to the Ephs efforts, as she recorded seven kills in the first set.

The two teams were again evenly matched in the early action of the second set, and Marit Hoyem led the way for the Ephs with 3 early kills. However, Tufts used a massive 12-2 run to secure a 22-11 advantage, with a Williams timeout doing little to slow down the Jumbos. That lead was more than enough for Tufts to clinch the second set, which they won 25-13 from a successful joust in the final point.

Tufts continued their momentum from the previous set, as they jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the third set. Although it didn't take long for the Ephs to get back into the set, the Jumbos used a 5 point streak to build an 18-12 advantage, forcing a Williams timeout. Tufts continued on their run though, and won the third set 25-15 off a Williams error.

Tufts leaders were: senior Jennelle Yarwood with 20 kills, junior Maddie Yu with 36 assists, and senior Stephanie Lee with 23 digs. Williams leaders were: Celia Adams with 17 kills, junior Lauren Kauppila with 36 assists, and Lauren Kauppila with 20 digs.

Reflecting on the loss, Eph head coach Christi Kelsey commented, "The first set was a good example of things we've talked about as a team, of just staying in the present, staying in the point, and when we got pushed a little bit in the first set, we just came right back and responded really well. Then I think in the second and third set, we let some things build and we let one mistake become a second mistake become a third mistake, and to Tufts' credit they certainly made some adjustments and did some things well. I thought we came back a little bit better in the fourth set, but we're still trying to work on our consistency, and I think the team has really bought into that, and we just have to keep trying to get these opportunities and hopefully we'll make a breakthrough and be able to put some of these stronger matches together."

The Ephs will be back in action at SUNY Cortland for a doubleheader on Saturday, October 15th against Clarkson University at 3:30 PM EST and SUNY Cortland at 6:00 PM EST.
