FAIRFAX, Va. – The Williams wrestling team opened its 2022-23 season on the road in Fairfax Virginia competing in the George Mason University duals. Williams competed against two NCAA DI teams and one NCAA DII team.
The Ephs defeated Queens University a DI 25-19 but fell to DII Millersville (Pa.) and DI host George Mason.
"I can't believe how hard this team competes," said Eph head coach
Scott Honecker. "Obviously it was an aggressive start to the season wrestling a DII team and 2 D1 teams for our first competition. I told the guys that we aren't really sure how we stack up against this level of competition, so we were going to grade them on effort and decision making— two things totally in their control. I am happy to say that the effort was an A+, and the result of that was a Division 1 win over Queens. The decision making was probably a B, and that can be addressed in the practice room along with the technical points we observed today.
We started 5 freshmen and I was very interested to see what they would bring to the competition. They didn't win them all, but they threw heavy punches from whistle to whistle. Peter Kane had a nice debut going 3-0 at 157, but just like everyone else, all he did was establish the starting point from which we grow.
