New York, NY. – Yesterday the Ephs traveled to Harlem to face off against the Columbia Lions. Among the crowd were many Williams alums, who came in from New York to cheer on teammates, which is always great to see. Although we were down four out of our starting nine due to illness and injuries, we put up a strong fight down the line, with the final score being 8-1.
In the first round of matches, Leonard (Lieutenant) Lee lead off the team with his return to court after recovering from an ankle sprain. Unfortunately, the sniper training did not translate today, and he lost 3-0. Also up for the purple cows was
Asher Leavy, who had a close four game battle. Although he went down 2-0, he utilized his straight rails to come back from a 10-6 deficit in the third to win 12-10, and almost did it again in the fourth but ended up losing 11-9. And last up in the first round was
Rafay Syed, who played some solid squash, managing to dig deep and force some intense rallies but ultimately lost 3-0 to solid opponent.
Starting for the Ephs in the second round of matches was
Andrew Minnis, who had his first experience at the one seed. He had a solid performance but eventually fell 3-0 to a talented opponent. Next up was
John Nicholson, who after a slow start in the first regrouped and managed to have two tight games but ultimately fell 3-0. And last up in the second round was
Charles Merrill, who put in a great effort and had several close games but also lost 3-0.
And starting in the last round of matches for the Ephs was
Alex Akbari and
Jack Lee. Alex lost 3-0 to a talented player, and Jack had a close first game with the score being 11-9 but unfortunately ended up losing 3-0 as well. However, it was not losses all around, as last on court for the Ephs was superstar
Andrew Lee, who had an absolutely dominating performance. Utilizing every shot in his arsenal, he managed to take down his opponent 3-0, winning the only match for the Ephs.
After several matches without the full lineup, Head Coach
Zafi Levy says it best that "We are looking forward to get back to training over the next three weeks and returning in early January with a full squad before we start competing again". The Ephs will be back on the road on January 6
th when we play Franklin and Marshall College, Happy Holidays everyone.
