New Haven, CT -- This evening, the Williams College women's squash team trekked to Yale University to challenge the #5 nationally ranked bulldogs. The Ephs knew this would be a challenging match against some of the best players in the country. They used this opportunity to practice different styles of play and find areas for improvement. Although the Ephs were unable to steal a game from their talented opponents, they fought hard during each rally.
Tonight's match followed a five-court system. On first on the top court was co-captain
Quan Ng (#2). Ng's short game and length were strong, but she fell in straight games. Nearby, sophomores
Amanda Solecki (#4) and
Nora Brant (#5) were in battles of their own. They were focused and disciplined at keeping the ball deep, but that was not enough to out last their bulldog opponents. The other two first round matches were played by
Roshni Pal (#7) and
Isabel Kelly (#9). Both fell in three games.
The second round of matches had a similar outcome.
Haley Jefferson (#1) and
Theresa Kay (#3) displayed strong squash and hard work despite losing in straight games to top players. While they competed, first-year
Deena Iqbal (#6) had a solid performance, winning many points by being aggressive and cutting the ball off. She and co-captain
Nikita Srivastava (#8) were eventually swept by the bulldogs.
Coach
Zafi Levy was happy of the team's competition today: "I thought we competed very hard today against one of the top teams in the country. We certainly learned and improved, especially at #2,
Quan Ng played extremely well and showed that she belonged at the top of college ranks. At #6
Deena Iqbal also battled hard and nearly won a game against a top player."
The Ephs are proud of their performance and are excited to implement what they learned in their next match against #6 ranked UVA this Sunday.
