Williamstown, MA. --- In the first home game of the year at Farley-Lamb Field, Union College (4-0) came back from an early 3-0 deficit to defeat the Williams College Ephs (1-1, 1-0) 14-6. The winning goal came off the stick of Union's Hayden Frey completing the senior's two goal, three point night.
The Ephs jumped out to an early lead to begin this contest, with Senior
Tim Saffold executing a beautiful solo run just 1:50 in to the opening quarter. Williams would not take long to add to this lead, after a nifty move from behind the goal by senior
Jake Haase tucked the ball over the shoulder of the goalie just three minutes later. The final goal of this first quarter Williams burst came on a dodge from behind the net as sophomore
Calvin Caputo found the back of the net from the goal line.
As the clock passed two minutes left in the first, however, Union began their charge back off the stick Peter Burnes and Hayden Frey quickly tallied another off a failed clearance from the Ephs with just 23 seconds remaining. The roll didn't stop there, as Union would go on to bury six in the second quarter to command an 8-3 lead heading into the locker room at the half. Seniors Keaton McCann and Peter Burnes would lead the ambush with two points each.
The third quarter seemed to be much of the same, with Union tacking on five more goals, with McCann and Burnes both drawing another assist. Williams would break the streak, however, as a loose ball was hounded and fed to sophomore
Bjorn Davidson, who found the bottom corner, as the quarter ended 13-4 in favor of Union.
The Ephs opened the scoring in the 4
th quarter, as a pass from the goal line by
Spencer Goodbar found an unmarked
Jake Haase in front who finished calmly. A minute later Hasse fed from behind to Caputo who threw a few fakes and finished high for his second goal of the game with 11:02 left in the game. Union would add one more to their lead as the game wound down, finishing the opening night victory in Williamstown 14-6.
Eph head coach
George McCormack felt that his squad was "out executed in a lot of areas" but remained optimistic at this early season result. He continued, "I felt like we opportunities all day, we just didn't put the ball in the net". The team will look to bounce back on Saturday in a NESCAC matchup versus Colby at home with the game starting at 10:15 AM..
