Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Bowdoin Downs the Ephs 17-13

BRUNSWICK, MAINE – The Williams men's lacrosse team opened up a 4-3 lead at the end of the first quarter and owned a two-goal lead at the half, 8-6, but Bowdoin ran off 8 straight goals, 11 total in the second half to claim a 17-13 victory over the Ephs.

The Ephs are now 1-2 on the year and 1-1 in NESCAC play, while Bowdoin improved to 5-0 and 3-0 NESCAC.

Bowdoin opened the game creating a 2-0 lead, but Williams answered with Pearse Glavin scoring twice with Jake Haase and Tim Saffold registering assists. When Saffold and Noah Dewbrey scored unassisted the Ephs owned a 4-2 lead that was cut to 4-3 at the end of the first quarter. Saffold scored unassisted with 24 seconds left in the quarter and just six seconds later Noah Dewbrey scored unassisted, but Bowdoin's Jason Lach scored with just 4 seconds remaining in the quarter

Williams outscored Bowdoin 4-3 in the second quarter as well and took an 8-6 lead into halftime. Jake Haase, Cal Ewanich, Tim Saffold and Spencer Goodbar scored in the second quarter for Williams.

A Calvin Caputo man-up goal and another unassisted tally by Saffold gave the Ephsa 10-7 lead.

Bowdoin, however, responded in a big way notching 8 straight goals from seven different players from the middle of the third quarter into the fourth quarter. Will Byrne was the lone Polar Bear to score two goals in that run.

A Pearse Galvin goal assisted by Owen Roegge stopped the Bowdoin run in the fourth quarter, but the Polar Bears were up 15-11 at that point.

Bowdoin's Donal Mullane led all scorers with 5 goals on the day, while the Ephs were led by Tim Saffold and Pearese Glavin who each scored 3 goals and registered 2 assists.

Eph goalie Matt Freitas allowed 17 goals and made 14 saves, while Bowdoin's Robert Hobbs also made 14 saves and allowed just 13 goals.

Eph head coach George McCormack noted post-game, "I thought overall this was our best effort of the year. We just made some critical mistakes in the third and fourth quarters in what was a really hard fought game. I thought Pearse Glavin and Tim Saffold stood out for us on offense and Patrick Gaul was really solid on defense."

Next up for the Ephs is a home NESCAC encounter on Monday, March 21 when they will host Colby on Farley-Lamb Field at 1 :00 PM.
