WILLIAMSTOWN, MASS. – Williams (2-2/2-1 NESCAC) never trailed in defeating upset minded Colby (2-2/1-2 NESCAC) this afternoon on Farley-Lamb Field 19-10.
Colby entered the contest fresh off a 10-9 upset of nationally ranked Wesleyan at home on Saturday, while the Ephs were returning home from a 17-13 loss at Bowdoin on Saturday.
The Ephs'
Tim Saffold opened the scoring in the contest when he scored unassisted just 35 seconds into the contest. Colby's Ryan Darby off a feed from Mas Solmssen tied the game at one all just over a minute later.
At 8:20
Jake Haase netted the first of three unassisted Eph goals. Haase's net stretcher in a man-up opportunity gave the Ephs a 2-1 lead and Colby was not able to catch the Ephs the remainder of the game. Also netting unassisted tallies in this trio of goals that bumped the Eph lead to 4-1 at the end of the first quarter were
Jack Sercu and
Harrison Cross.
Colby's Jack Goller opened the scoring in the second quarter notching an unassisted goal, but the Ephs responded with
Calvin Caputo,
Cal Ewanich and Haase all scoring unassisted and the Eph lead was now up to five, 7-2.
The Ephs scored three more times in the second quarter with Jake Hasase assisting first
Calvin Caputo and then
Pearse Glavin, while
Nick Bates added an unassisted tally. The Ephs added three more goals in the quarter with
Harrison Cross assisting on both
Pearse Glavin goals and Finlay McKnight scoring unassisted.
Leading 14-9 after three quarters the Ephs added two goals each by
Calvin Caputo and
Jake Haase and
Pearse Glavin notched a man-up goal to down the Mules 19-10.
On the day the Ephs gathered in 32 ground balls to the Mules' 19.
Eph netminder Mat
t Freitas registered 17 saves and allowed 10 goals while Mules goalie Matt Suffredini allowed 19 goals and stopped 16 Eph shots.
Eph head coach
George McCormack commented after the game, "Colby played a good game at Wesleyan and certainly we knew we were going to get a good game today. Conference games are just so tough. I was really proud of how our guys responded coming off of two tough losses. I thought our offense stepped it up today and a lot of guys contributed and our defense did a nice job.

Pearse Glavin on offense. "
