Ephs Top Trinity 9-5 in season Opener on the Road

Hartford, Conn. – Trinity opened the scoring in the game at 9:31 of the first quarter when Graham Penfield setup Connor McCulloch with a pass and McCulloch was able to beat Eph goalie Matt Freitas to put the Bantams on top.
 
Williams responded to the McCulloch goal with four straight goals. Three goals in the first quarter and one in the second. Spencer Goodbar scored the first Eph goal of the season at 5:21 to tie the game at one. Goodbar's goal was an unassisted tally. Just over a minute later Jake Haase tallied an unassisted goal to put the Ephs on top 2-1 and it was a lead they would not relinquish.
 
Cal Caputo doubled the Eph lead at 2:23 (3-1) with Cal Ewanich assisting.
 
Williams took the 3-1 lead into the second quarter and the Eph lead grew to three when Spencer Goodbar tallied his second goal off a feed from Pearse Glavin. Williams was now on  top 4-1 at 10:56 of the second quarter.
 
Trinity netted two goals in a row, one by Jake Baker and one by Ryan Werner with Connor McCulloch getting credit for an assist on both Bantam scores. With 1:37 to go before the half, Calvin Caputo scored his second goal off a Jake Haase feed to put Williams up 5-3.
 
Williams tallied three goals in the first seven minutes of the third quarter to up their 5-3 halftime lead to an 8-3 lead. Jesse Shapiro scored a man-up goal with Pearse Glavin assisting. Just 28 seconds later Cal Caputo scored his third goal of the contest with Owen Roegge registering the assist and Ian DiPietro assisted by Eddie Lloyd scored to give the Ephs that 8-3 lead.
 
The Ephs' ninth and final goal was an unassisted score by Jake Haase in the fourth quarter.
 
Eph junior goalie Matt Freitas made 15 saves in the victory.
 
"I thought our defense played really well today and Matt Freitas had a good day in the cage making 15 saves," noted Eph head coach George McCormack. "The defense played at a really high level. We were opportunistic on offense and it was a good way to start the season on the road against a good Trinity team.
 
The Ephs will next play Wednesday, March 9 when they host Union College on Farley-Lamb Field in a 4:30 PM contest.
