Late Ephs Comeback Comes Up Short at Undefeated MIT

Cambridge, MA – Under the bright lights, the undefeated Massachusetts Institute of Technology Beavers (11-0) would string together three goals late in the fourth quarter to defeat the Williams College Ephs (6-5) by a score of 13-12.

The first half was a heated battle between the two sides, each team taking turns with the lead early in the game. After the Ephs would take an early 3-2 lead off goals from Calvin Caputo, Zachary Romrell, and Thomas Bono, MIT would bounce back enter the second quarter up 4-3.

Spencer Goodbar would add his 8th of the year, but the Beavers would remain strong and extend their lead to 6-4 before heading into the locker room at half time. Goalie Will Bock would stand tall as the Beavers attempted 34 shots in the half alone, testing the netminder's ability early and often.

The third frame proved to be the most contested as each team struck four times. Pearse Glavin would open the Ephs scoring in the quarter, off a feed from Nolan Cooleen for the sophomore's 22nd goal of the year. Jesse Shapiro would then tack on two man-up goals in quick succession before Calvin Caputo would add one even strength just a minute later to keep the Ephs within one.

After a late MIT goal in the third, the Ephs would find themselves behind two entering the final quarter. Pearse Glavin and Finlay MacKnight would bring the Ephs level just two minutes in, setting up the game for a grandstand finish as the clock wound down. MIT would answer sharply, as they would bury three of their own to take a commanding lead into the final minutes.

With just 2:40 left in the game, Calvin Caputo and Jake Haase would link up to create an electric goal, completing Caputo's hat trick. The Ephs would reclaim the ball with just a minute left, before Haase would once again feed Caputo to bring the Ephs within one. Williams could not manage to maintain the ball off the ensuing faceoff and their comeback effort could not be completed as they fell 13-12.

After a grueling road trip to Cambridge, the Ephs will hit the road once again on Saturday taking on NESCAC rivals Amherst College, in what will surely be an outstanding matchup.
