Ephs Fall to Rivals Amherst 14-10

Box Score Amherst, MA – With 4:38 remaining in the second quarter, the Amherst College Mammoths (7-5, 5-3) would finish their six-goal run to end the half up five, ultimately going on to defeat the Williams College Ephs (6-6, 4-3) by a score of 14-10.

The first half wasn't all bad for the Ephs, as they would enjoy two separate one goal leads in the opening quarter. Tim Saffold and Calvin Caputo would register two each in the first frame, but the Mammoths would stay right with them, leveling the score before the buzzer.

Pearse Glavin would add one early in the second, once again edging the Ephs ahead, briefly however, as the Mammoths would score 29 seconds later, not allowing Williams the chance to run away with the game. The subsequent six goals for Amherst would provide them with a 10-5 lead heading into the locker room at half time. Coach McCormack spoke about the quarter saying, "We just kind of had a momentary lapse, we were just not really wanting groundballs, not getting the possessions that we wanted and that resulted in them getting numerous opportunities."

The Ephs looked to jump back into the game early as their intensity caught the Mammoths off guard. Tim Saffold would bury his 12th of the season just 45 seconds into the half, notching him the hat trick on the day. Jack Sercu would add on at the 10:42 mark off the pass from Jake Haase, one of his four assists for the game. Glavin added his second late in the third, however, the Mammoths offense continued rolling as they would tally four of their own in the quarter to maintain their lead.

The final quarter was all Ephs as they looked to close the gap on their rivals. Calvin Caputo would finish his own hat trick, firing home his 25th of the year with six minutes remaining in the match. Unfortunately, it was too little too late as even a Bjorn Davidson goal with time winding down would not be enough to surmount the comeback.

The Ephs look to return to winning ways next week with another Little Three matchup as they host the Wesleyan University Cardinals next Saturday.
