Lewiston, ME – The Williams College Ephs (5-3,4-1 NESCAC) shined bright against the Bates College Bobcats (0-8, 0-5 NESCAC) winning 21-8, fueled by a combined eleven goals from top point scorers,
Pearse Glavin and
Jake Haase.
Williams would not take long to bounce back from their defeat midweek, as a feed from
Calvin Caputo would be buried home by
Jake Haase just two and a half minutes into the game. The first quarter continued to be much of the same as the Ephs would pile on the pressure finding the back of the net five more times before the first buzzer. The Williams goal scorers included
Tim Saffold,
Owen Roegge,
Pearse Glavin,
Jesse Shapiro, and a second for Haase. The roll wouldn't stop there as the Ephs would add two more early in the second from
Will Swindell and
Connor Dubiel to extend the lead to eight.
Defensively, the Williams core would prove tough for the Bobcats in the first half, holding them scoreless for the opening quarter and a half. Goalie
Matt Freitas stood tall, stopping nine of eleven shots. The only lapse came seven minutes into the second, when Bates would fire home two in quick succession to end their drought.
Williams was quick to respond, as an outstanding solo run from
Jake Haase resulted in a powerful shot from the slot to complete his hat trick.
Calvin Caputo would tack on another to give Williams ten goals and twenty shots at the half.
The Ephs potent offense stayed hot after the break, as the third quarter belonged to Glavin and Haase. Sophomore
Pearse Glavin would score three and senior Haase would add four more to bring his total on the day to seven goals. Coach
George McCormack praised Haase's performance saying, "He does a great job leading by example and doing all the right things. His performance today was just a great example of showing how to bounce back after a tough loss."
Williams would continue to dominate possession and both teams would add on late for a final score of 21-8 Williams. The Ephs face a very tough challenge on Wednesday as the #3 Tufts Jumbos come to town in a huge NESCAC, and nationally ranked, matchup.
