Ephs Fall to Middlebury 15-5 in the Final Game of the Season

Box Score

WILLIAMSTOWN, MASS– Ephs fall short in their final game of the 2022 season, 15-5 to Middlebury. The Ephs started the game as strong as ever, but Middlebury's run in the last two quarters proved to be enough to beat the Ephs.

Isabel Arvelo opened up the game for the Ephs to take a 1-0 lead with 10:28 remaining on the clock in the first quarter after a crafty spin move and bounce shot that found the back of the net. At the 7:13 mark, Caitlyn Joyce made a spectacular save to keep the Ephs one-goal cushion. The story of the first quarter? A defensive clinic from the Ephs is all that needs to be said. Caitlyn Joyce came up with big saves, and the defense stood tall and forced the Panthers into rushed opportunities.

The first couple minutes of the second quarter told a different story than the first quarter. The game became a bit more open and allowed the Panthers to find the back of the net on a second chance effort from Anna Spehr, assisted by Lily Riseberg. The Ephs squashed any chance of a Panther comeback when Isabel Arvelo rolled a free-position shot past the Panthers goalie. But the Panthers responded quickly and tied the game with 5:49 remaining in the half, courtesy of a bouncing shot from Hope Shue.

The Panthers took the lead shortly after through a Kelcey Dion goal. They added one more a few minutes later to take a two-goal lead after Jane Early ripped a shot into the side netting. Thanks to a top corner shot from Niki Mormile, they tacked on one more to take a 5-2 lead just before halftime.

Only about a 1:20 into the second half, the Panthers added to their lead courtesy of goals from Grace Getman and Susan Rowley. With 10:22 remaining on the clock in the third quarter, the Panthers added another one from a free-position goal by Kelcey Dion. They extended their lead through Maggie Coughlin, who fired a shot into the side netting a few moments later. However, the Ephs stole one back a few seconds later after Abby Godwin ripped a shot between the legs of the Panthers goalie from a free position.

With 5:45 left in the third quarter, the Panthers regained their seven-goal advantage to take a 10-3 lead thanks to a goal from Jane Earley. After the Panthers added five more to their tally, the Ephs found the back of the net after an excellent give and go between Lily Warendorf and Shea van Den Broek that van Den Broek finished off.

Shea van Den Broek scored the final goal of the contest after a beautiful shot from a free position. However, it was not enough as the Panthers won the game 15-5

"Just really proud of the team and how we grew throughout the season…huge shout out to our seniors (Mason Yonge, Allison Norris, Madison Fulcher-Melendy, Isabel Rosenberg, and Sarah Skidmore) for a really strong foundation and being an anchor…tonight was for them and the team and the season."
