Men's Tennis Defeated 5-0 in NCAA Quarterfinals by Case Western Reserve University

ORLANDO, Fla. – Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) opened the match by sweeping all three doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead into the six singles matches

Case Western's James Hopper and Jonathan Powell won 8-3 at #1 doubles, but the #2 and #3 double matches were much tighter. CWRU came out on top in both, winning 8-7 at #2 and 8-6 at #3.

Ar #2doubles the Ephs' Karan Amin and Shawn Berdia were down 5-3, but battled back to tie at 5-5 and took a 7-6 lead before falling 8-7.

At # 3 doubles the Eph team of Peter Freylinghuysen  and Jack Truwit were down 4-3 and tied the match at 4 all, before falling 8-6.

Trailing 3-0 the Ephs were now tasked with winning five of six singles matches to advance to the Semifinals tomorrow.

The Spartans' Ansh Shah notched the fourth team point when he downed Karan Amin in straight sets 6-3, 6-0 at # 3 singles.

Match point for the Spartans and a berth in the Semifinals was secured by Jonathan Powell when he defeated Kirun Cheung 7-5, 6-4  at number six singles.

"We had very early opportunities in doubles that we didn't capitalize on and unfortunately that really cost us," stated Eph head coach Dan Greenberg. "We let Case get comfortable and gave them too many easy points. Credit to them for staying solid start to finish but unfortunately we didn't compete well when it mattered most. That said, I do think we trained and competed well all year to get us to this point. Our seniors were incredible leaders, positive and bought in for the last four years, despite all the interruptions, and it's because of them that we were able to enjoy such an awesome last season. I wish it could've ended on a better note for them, but the younger guys will carry the torch they lit."

The Ephs end their season at 15-4.
