Williamsport, PA – The Ephs are down at Lycoming College this weekend competing alongside 15 other East Coast programs at the Budd Whitehill National Duals. The 16 teams were split into four groups of four, competing in their groups today for seeding in the knockout tournament tomorrow. Alongside Williams in Group B were Ferrum, Ithaca, and York.
The Ephs faced off with York in their first dual of the day, losing by a score of 25-15. York posted an impressive performance in the lighter weight classes, sweeping 125 through 157 all in tight contests. The Ephs picked up three points courtesy of a 4-2 win by decision from
Eamon Garrity-Rokous at 165. Will Smith and
Wyatt Moyer, at 184 and 285 respectively, delivered the remainder of the Ephs' dozen points via pins.
Next up for the Ephs was Ferrum who was coming off of a 30-12 loss to Ithaca. Williams was able to overcome the Panthers by a 20-13 margin. Williams got off to a strong start, courtesy of comfortable wins by decision at 125 and 133 from
David Yeh and
Jack Napeloni respectively. Ferrum halved the 6-0 defecit with a win at 141 before Caleb Seyfreid stepped up with a massive 26-8 tech fall victory, boosting the Ephs' lead to eight points.
Peter Kane followed at 157 with a win by decision, bringing the lead to 11 points. Juniors
Dante Gutbrod and Will Smith at 174 and 184 respectively, sealed the deal.
The Ephs carried a 1-1 record into the final group stage dual with the Ithaca Bombers. Ithaca entered this final dual of the day with a 2-0 record having beaten Ferrum and York by a combined margin of 48 points. Ithaca was able to keep their hot streak going, picking up a 35-10 victory. Highlights for the Ephs came at 125, 157, and 184, with Yeh, Kane, and Smith each picking up victories.
With a 1-2 record in their group, the Ephs finished the day in the third spot behind Ithaca and York. This sets the team up in a double elimination, four-team bracket playing for as high as 9
th place overall tomorrow. Williams is matched up with the Messiah Falcons and will face the winner of hosts Lycoming and Little Three rival Wesleyan should they prevail.
