Middlebury, VT - Williams Men's Swim and Dive traveled to Middlebury for their second tri meet in 2 days and their final meet of the season. The Ephs walked away with wins against both Middlebury and Hamilton, and a 10-0 record on the season. Head coach,
Steve Kuster, remarked "The men had a great meet on Friday and finished things off well today. They should be proud of their undefeated and untied regular season, our first since 2008, but hopefully motivated for a whole lot more to come."
The first event of the meet with the 200 medley relay. The Ephmen took the event in a close race against the top team from Middlebury. Zeb Hart '23 led off the backstroke leg in 23.83, followed by Liam Sullivan's '23 breaststroke, 25.81. Oliver Schalet '25 swam the fly leg in 22.55 and Timothy Page '23 anchored the relay in 21.77. Noah Labich '25 and Jacob Grover '24 also had strong splits with Labich's fly at 23.00 and Grover's freestyle at 21.89.
Immediately after, in the first individual event, the Ephs "one-two"ed the 1000 freestyle. Alex Atherton '24 took the win in 9:48.20, followed by Harrison Williams in 9:52.51. The two blew the heat out of the water, finishing nearly 6 seconds ahead of the rest of the field.Â
Ephmen's backstroke had a strong showing today. Nick Whitcomb '23 won the 50 in 23.60 and was closely followed by teammates Gabriel Lee '26 and Timothy Page '23 who took 2nd and 3rd. In the 100, Oliver Schalet tied for first in 52.34, just ahead of teammates Carter Anderson '25 and Liam Sullivan '23 in 3rd and 4th.
Liam Sullivan also had a strong performance in the 50 breaststroke. He placed 2nd with a time of 26.47. Jacob Grover placed 3rd, just behind him, in 26.64. In the 100, Charlie Venci '25, took the top spot for the Ephs in 3rd with a 1:00.38, a season best time.
Despite tough competition, the Ephs put up strong performances in the butterfly events. Noah Labich placed 2nd in the 100 in 51.76 and 3rd in the 50 with a 23.39. His teammate, Zeb Hart, touched out a competitor in the 50 by 0.04 seconds to win in a time of 23.22.
Gabriel Lee destroyed his heat and won the 50 freestyle in 21.87, a season best time by nearly half a second. Lee also swam the 500 and placed 3rd overall with a time of 4:46.46. Michael Ma '26 also swam the 500 and was the top finisher for the Ephs. He placed 3rd in 4:44.88. The two finished ahead of the next finisher by over 5 seconds.
Kobe Tray '23 represented the Ephs on the boards today. Tray won 3 meter with a score of 332.25, nearly 100 points ahead of the next diver, an impressive margin. Tray also won 1 meter. This time by a 92 point margin, with a score of 314.93. About his performance today, teammate and fellow diver, Ben Shapiro '23, noted that Tray dove "very well" and should be proud of his results.
In the 100 freestyle, Harrison Williams took the win in 48.27, over half a second ahead of the field. Timothy Page finished 2nd in 48.85, just out-touching his competitor by 0.03 with a strong finish.
The Ephs took 5 of the top 6 spots in the final individual event of the meet, the 100 IM. Oliver Schalet won the event by over a second with a 51.74. Harrison Williams touched 2nd in 52.93. Liam Sullivan, Charlie Venci, and Nick Whitcomb took 4th through 6th places.
The final relay was the 200 freestyle. The team of Nick Whitcomb, Gabriel Lee, Quinton Hastings '24, Zeb Hart took 2nd place in 1:27.17. Lee and Hastings had the fastest splits with a 21.30 and 21.42.
Today's meets conclude the regular season for the Swim and Dive team. Next weekend, the Ephs will return to Middlebury to kick off their championship season at the Middlebury Invite. The NESCAC conference meets starting February 9th and 16th will continue their Championship season following the Middlebury invite.
