BOSTON, MASS. — The Williams Women's Track and Field team competed at Middlebury's New England Small College Invite on Sunday, January 29, 2023. The meet took place at the TRACK at New Balance and featured NESCAC conference members such as Amherst College, Middlebury College, and Tufts University. Throughout the long day of competition, the Ephs worked hard to achieve personal records, top-place finishes, and DIII New England's qualifying marks.
The meet kicked off with freshman Emma Miller competing in the weight throw. Miller threw an impressive personal best of 11.51m in the preliminaries and placed second in her flight. She earned a spot in the finals and finished 9th overall with this throw. Later in the day, Miller competed in the shot put and placed 3rd overall. She threw a DIII New England's qualifying distance of 11.46m.
In the first track event, Ziann Facey '26 and Hayden Colfax '25 ran the 60m hurdles. Facey ran a personal best time of 9.35, and Colfax ran 9.28 in the preliminary heats, qualifying both Ephs for the finals. Facey placed 6th and achieved another personal record and DIII New England's qualifying time of 9.33 in the finals. Colfax closely followed her teammate, finishing 7th with a DIII New England's qualifying time of 9.37. Facey's time of 9.33 is number 10 on the Williams All-Time list, and Colfax's 9.28 is number 8 on the list. The Ephs continued their success in the 60m dash. Captain Kiara Tan, Rachel Arthur '25, Malia Klein '25, and Morgan Nasir '25 qualified for the finals in the 60m with times of 7.76, 8.02, 8.10 and 8.15, respectively. Tan went on to run a blazing 7.61, a new personal best and school record, to win the event. Arthur crossed the finish line in 8.08, putting her in 5th place, and Klein ran 8.13, placing 6th. All three Ephs qualified for DIII New England's with their times. Continuing with the sprints, many Ephs competed in the 200m. Tan had another outstanding performance, running a DIII New England's qualifying time of 25.22 to place 2nd in the event. Klein also competed in the 200m and qualified for DIII New England's with a time of 26.40. She finished 5th overall. Gabby Odoom '25 had a strong performance and ran a personal best time of 27.11, finishing in 18th. Facey earned her third personal record of the day, running 27.79 and placing 31st. In the 400m, Camryn Taylor '24 ran a speedy DIII New England's qualifying time of 58.41 to finish first. Elsa Martin '25, Katie Nath '23, and Alisa Kanganis '25 also competed in the 400m. They ran personal bests of 1:02.16, 1:02.81, and 1:04.24, respectively. 
Turning to the jumps, captain Kristen Chou and Colfax competed in the long jump finals. Chou finished in 6th overall with a DIII New England's qualifying jump of 5.22m, and Colfax placed 8th, jumping 5.00m. In the pole vault, freshman Ellie Fitzgerald cleared a personal best of 3.60m to place second and put her at number 5 on the Williams All-Time list. Jae Yu '25 also competed in the event and cleared 3.30m to place 6th. Both Ephs qualified for DIII New England's with these performances. Next up, Livi Mazerolle '26, Amelie Jamanka '26, and captain Hannah Brown competed in the high jump. Mazerolle and Jamanka tied for 2nd place, clearing the DIII New England's qualifying mark of 1.56m. This was a personal best jump for Jamanka. Brown jumped 1.51m to place 7th.
Ephs hit strong marks across the distance races. Leading the Ephs in the 800m, Katerina Papachela '26 placed 6th with a time of 2:20.95 for a new personal best and DIII New England's qualifying time. Sammie Seamon '24 and Greta Vaughn '26 also qualified for DIII New England's in the 800m, finishing in 2:23.40 and 2:25.93 respectively. The distance squad had equally strong performances in the mile race. Blakeley Buckingham '25 took 1st in the event with an impressive personal best of 4:57.47, putting her at number 9 on the Williams All-Time list. Close behind was Nora Johnson '25, finishing in 5:11.25 for 4th place and a new personal record. Also in the mile were Captain Lily Wells '23 and Lucy Gagnon '24. Wells took 7th with a personal best of 5:17.64, followed by Gagnon in 5:19.49. Buckingham, Johnson, Wells, and Gagnon all qualified for DIII New England's in the mile with their strong performances. In the 3000m race, Molly Fitzgibbons '24 won the event with an impressive time of 9:52.99 for a new personal best. Fitzgibbons' time is 4th on the Williams All-Time list. Ella Ball '25 also hit a new personal best in the 3k, taking 2nd in the event in 9:59.98. Both Fitzgibbons and Ball hit DIII New England's qualifying marks. The longest open distance event on the track was the 5000m race. Fiona Picone '26 led the Ephs with her 5th place finish and a new personal best. Her time of 18:02.23 qualifies her for DIII New England's in the 5k race.
The Ephs had continued success in the relays. The strong DMR team of Blakeley Buckingham '25, Grace Kaercher '25, Sophie Rosencrans '25, and Nora Johnson '25 took third overall with a time of 12:32.75. In the final event of the evening, two teams of Ephs competed in the 4x400m relay. The team of Ella Sukup '26, Camryn Taylor '24, Elsa Martin '25, and Claudia Iannelli '23 took 6th in 4:07.87. The second team of Greta Vaughn '26, Katie Nath '23, Gabby Odoom '25, and Alisa Kanganis '25 came in 8th with a time of 4:15.04. 
The Middlebury New England Small College Invite had no shortage of impressive races. After an exciting day of competition, the Ephs look forward to returning to the track and field again in February. For the majority of the Ephs, the next competition will be the annual David Hemery Valentine Meet at Boston University on February 10th. Pentathletes will instead travel to the nearby MIT Invite on February 11th.
