WILLIAMSTOWN, MA. - Finer finishing in the second half saw the Williams College Ephs (7-3, 4-1 NESCAC) put 3 past the Wesleyan University Cardinals (8-5, 4-4 NESCAC) to take a 3-2 Little Three victory on Williamson Field.
Despite outshooting the Cardinals 9-1 in the first half, the Ephs were unable to get a shot past Wesleyan's goalkeeper. Eph senior goalie Gates Tenerowicz came up big with a save and kept the score leveled with less than 4 minutes remaining in the second quarter.Â
The Ephs came out with high intensity in the second half and 26 seconds in, junior Meaghan Boehm found first year Claire Colvin to put the Ephs up 1-0. The Ephs held that lead going into the fourth quarter.Â
Williams doubled their lead when senior Molly Hellman placed a pass in front of Boehm who ran up and struck it first time. Helen Deretchin got one back for the Cardinals from a penalty stroke to make it 2-1 with 6 minutes remaining in the game. Eph sophomore Kiki Higgins took the ball across the circle evading the defenders and struck a shot in the mid left section of the goal to give the Ephs a 3-1 lead. Wesleyan were awarded another penalty stroke and got another goal back to make it 3-2 with two minutes left. The Ephs were able to hold on to their lead and take a Little Three win on home soil. With the Ephs' win earlier in the season at Amherst coupled with today's win over the Cardinals, Williams captured the 2023 Little Three title .
On the day, the Ephs outshot the Cardinals 21-5. Williams struck 12 shots on goal and Wesleyan struck 4 on goal.Â
"It's always a battle with Wesleyan," stated Eph head coach Alix Barrale after the game. "I thought we responded really well to the setbacks of their strokes. I thought the first half we dominated. We played well, we just couldn't finish in front of the net so it was nice that we came out in the second half and capitalized in the circle. I thought our corners were better. Their defense and goalie were stellar. But we kept fighting!"
Up next for Williams is a road contest against Tufts University. The Ephs are set to take on the Jumbos tomorrow, Oct. 15, at 1 PM in Medford, Mass.
