WILLIAMSTOWN, MA -- For their final match of the fall semester, the Williams women's squash team played the #10 ranked Columbia Lions. After yesterday's home match against #8 Yale Bulldogs, the Ephs were ready to end the semester strong and fight hard against their tough opponents. With some well-played games, the result of the match was 8-1 in Columbia's favor.
On first tonight were sophomores
Rachel Miller (#2),
Anika Kakarla (#5), and
Naomi Jefferson-Sambanis (#8). These three players put up a solid fight against their opponents with great volleys and a high pace, but each fell in three games.
The next round was played by freshmen
Sophia Koehler (#3), and sophomores
Deena Iqbal (#6) and
Roshni Pal (#9). Koehler started off her match strong with a close first game, and hit tight dying lengths to the back, but was unable to clinch a game. Pal's second game was very close; she moved well and set up high flying lobs and strategic drops throughout the match, but had the same result as Koehler.
In the last round were freshmen
Melanie Wang (#1) and
Annie Chang (#10), and co-captains
Theresa Kay (#4) and
Nora Brant (#7). Kay started and ended her match strong, she was on top of the ball and in front of her opponent throughout the match, and had impeccable movement. Kay won her match in 4 games, giving the Ephs a point on the board. Wang, Brant, and Chang's matches ended in a 3-0 outcome in favor of their Lion opponents.
At the end of the match, Eph head coach
Hesham Aly commented, "The women's team played well today to close out the semester. Now is the time to rest, and practice harder over the break to come back stronger for some tight matches after winter break."
After the holiday break, the Ephs will get back on court to play #25 ranked Franklin and Marshall at the Simon Squash Center on January 5th in the new year.
