WILLIAMSTOWN, MA – This weekend Williams is hosting the NESCAC squash tournament. Today was the first round of the eight team knockout draw, and the Ephs defeated Colby 9-0. Friends and family packed the courts to watch the debut match of the weekend, and Williams did not disappoint. Co-Captain
Udai Pal says "Really happy with the way the team played today, everyone fought hard and played smart. Big shout out to Asher and Will who set the tone in the first round with a pair of convincing 3-0 wins".
Starting off the first round for Williams on the five-court system was
Alex Akbari, who held onto his longest match of day title by winning 5 games in 54 minutes. After going up 2-0, a lapse in focus caused him to drop the next two games, but he regrouped and win the fifth solidly. Co-Captain Will Evans won solidly in 3, and
Asher Leavy had a fiery start, bageling his opponent 11-0 in the first game before winning the next two.
Pierce Henderson won the first game, but dropped the second after a couple of errors. However, he stuck to his game and won the match 3-1.
Starting off the second round for Williams was
John Nicholson, who used his deep game to win 3-1.
Cameron Darnell won his match in 3 swift games.
Jack Lee had a strong start to his match, winning the first two games solidly. A momentary lapse in focus caused him to drop the third game, but he rallied and won the fourth.
Andrew Minnis relied on his deep game to control his opponent, which led him to a 3-0 victory. And last but not least was Co-Captain
Udai Pal used his bag of tricks to win 3-1, being sure to entertain the friends and family who came out to watch him.
It was a good win and the start to the NESCAC tournament Williams was looking for. They look forward to the semifinal match against Tufts tomorrow.
