Four Ephs Remain in Contention After Day One of NCAA Northeast Regional

Will Smith went 2-0 on the day, leaving him two wins away from the regional crown
Portland, Maine – Williams Wrestling kicked off the 2023 NCAA Northeast Regional on Saturday at the University of Southern Maine. The Ephs were represented at each of the 10 weight classes by the roster of David Yeh, Jack Napeloni, Donnie Morton, Caleb Seyfried, Peter Kane, Eamon Garrity-Rokous, Dante Gutbrod, William Smith, Elias Chen, and Wyatt Moyer.

Following an action-packed day of wrestling, Head Coach Scott Honecker shared, "Today was filled with ups and downs, but when the dust settled, we still have four guys in the hunt to qualify for the national tournament. Time to regroup, get some rest, and put out eyes toward that goal in the morning."

The four who will return to action on Sunday and remain in contention for tickets to the NCAA Championship in Salem, Virginia are Yeh, Kane, Gutbrod, and Smith.

Yeh kicked off the day at 125 with a huge 16-1 tech fall win. Following a setback in the quarterfinal, Yeh responded with another big win by 14-3 major decision in the second round of the consolation bracket to keep his NCAA hopes alive. Yeh will square off with Tanner Thatcher of Worcester Polytechnic Institute in the third round of the consolation bracket to begin day two.

Like Yeh, Kane got off to a good start at 157 with a first round victory before facing a setback in the quarterfinal but was able to fight off elimination with a dominant win by fall in the second round of the consolation bracket. He awaits Eric Zane of Rhode Island College in the third round of the consolation bracket tomorrow.

At 174, Gutbrod followed the same path as Yeh and Kane, responding to a narrow quarterfinal loss by 4-3 decision with a win by 2:07 fall in the second round of the consolation bracket. Adam Frost of Trinity College awaits him in the third round of the consolation bracket tomorrow.

In the best spot of the four heading into tomorrow is Smith who booked himself a date with Edwin Morales of Bridgewater State in the semifinals. Smith did so with incredible efficiency, only wrestling a combined two minutes and 21 seconds, delivering back-to-back pins.
