Ephs Have Strong Performances at Day 2 of NCAA DIII Track and Field Indoor Championships

Birmingham, AL – The Williams Women's Track and Field team closed out the two-day competition at the 2023 NCAA DIII Track and Field Indoor Championships on Saturday. Saturday's competition featured a number of Ephs in individual running events, including the 60m finals, the mile finals, and the 3000m race. By the end of the weekend, the Ephs accumulated 21 points for a 10th place team finish at the meet.

To start the day's competition for the Ephs, senior captain Kiara Tan raced in the finals of the 60m dash. Tan secured her spot in the finals by placing 8th in the preliminaries on Friday, running a speedy 7.65, approximately 40 milliseconds off her personal best time of 7.61. She went into the finals having already run two races (the 60m preliminaries and the 200m preliminaries) on Friday, but she still stayed focused and gave it her all. Her hard work paid off as she improved her position from preliminaries and placed 5th in the finals, crossing the finish line in 7.67. Tan earned All-American status for her impressive performance.

Next on the track was junior Molly Fitzgibbons who competed in the finals of the mile. Fitzgibbons had already run two other races on Friday previous to this event (the mile preliminaries and the distance medley relay). She placed 10th in the mile preliminaries with an outstanding time of 4:54.73 to secure her spot in the finals. Fitzgibbons started the final mile race strong, finding her place in the front pack, but got tripped up and fell in one of the early laps. In an impressive demonstration of perseverance and resilience, she got back up to finish the race. She ended up placing 9th with a time of 4:57.15.

In the final event with Eph competitors, Fitzgibbons and sophomore Ella Ball raced in the 3000m. This was Fitzgibbons' 4th event of the meet, and she finished in 18th, running 10:01.46. Ball had already run the 5000m on Friday, in which she earned All-American status, and was looking for another great performance. She maintained her place at the front of the pack for most of the race and crossed the line in 8th place, running a personal best time of 9:36.26 and making her a two-time All-American.

The Ephs had a number of outstanding performances across the various track and field events at the NCAA DIII Track and Field Indoor Championships. This meet marked the end of a very successful 2022-2023 indoor season for the Ephs. The team is eager to return to training before making their outdoor season debut in San Diego, CA at the Point Loma Collegiate Invite on March 25th.
