Claremont, CA - This morning the Ephs went head to head against Claremont Mudd Scripps. The Ephs battled every point but the momentum remained with the Athenas and led them to a 9-0 win.
The Ephs brought a lot of energy to doubles despite having to default their third line up. Number one doubles team
Katherine Orgielewicz and Yuu Ishikawa fought hard to close at the net, but the Athenas held back their aggression and won 8-3. Number two doubles team
Jane Ladaga and Ananya Aggarwal fought hard to find a break to win during the match, but struggled to find an opening. In the end, their opponents found more ways to attack and gain control of the points, and made it difficult for the Ephs to return their fast paced serves.
Down 3-0 after doubles, the Ephs tried to swing the momentum their way. Number one player Orgielewicz came out strong, hitting big and forcing the error from her opponent, and she took the first set 6-3. However, her opponent fought back and won the second set. In the third set tiebreak Orgielewicz fought closely and narrowly lost 10-8. Number five Ladaga fought hard against a player who remains undefeated this season, and Ladaga gave her closest match yet this season. Despite dropping the first set, Ladaga quickly gained steam in the 2nd set and began to move into the net and make her opponent extremely uncomfortable on her home courts. Ladaga was up 5-4 but could not fend off her Athena opponent, who climbed back to win 7-5.
Head Coach Anik Cepeda reflects, "Today was a rough day for Williams Tennis — we need these next 36 hours to re-set and re-fresh. The team will bounce back at Westmont."
The Ephs look forward to playing their last match in California on Tuesday.
