BRUNSWICK, ME – The Williams College softball team (5-9/1-1 NESCAC) opened NESCAC play with a doubleheader at Bowdoin (10-10/3-3 NESCAC). Williams won the first game 8-5, but the second game was halted after five innings due to snow and encroaching darkness with Bowdoin leading 7-2.
The Ephs came out swinging in the first game and
Sydney Fleming provided most of the power hitting two home runs and driving in 4 runs.
The Ephs tallied 4 runs in the first inning when Ronnie Ramos singled, Kelly McGuigan doubled and
Sydney Fleming hit a three-run homer. The fourth run came when
Bri Kang singled to right and
Bailey Burger-Moore reached on an error.
Adhya Tandon singled to load the bases. When
Vicky Trujillo Balderas reached on a fielder's choice
Bri Kang scored.
The Ephs added three unearned runs in the third inning on just two hits and some miscues by Bowdoin. The eighth and final run came on a solo home run lasered by Fleming well past the left field fence leading off the sixth inning giving her 4 RBIs in the game.
Sadie Leonard pitched 6.2 innings striking out 14 and allowing one earned run to get the win.
Madison Mok started the 7
th inning and pitched one third of an inning. Leonard relieved Mok and recorded the final out with a strike out.
In game 2
Elyse Chan was the Eph starting pitcher and Bowdoin started Anna Halliday.
The second game featured several snow squalls and encroaching darkness and was halted after five innings with Bowdoin leading 7-2.
Bowdoin's Lilly Armstrong led off the bottom of the first inning with a double and advanced to third on a ground out to second base. Armstrong then came home on a long fly out to right field by Angelina Mayers to put the Polar Bears up 1-0.
Bowdoin added four more runs in the third inning and single runs in the fourth and fifth innings for their seven runs.
The Ephs' two runs came in the fourth inning when with one out
Bailey Burger-Moore doubled down the right field line. Savanah Slater and
Vicky Trujillo Balderas both walked.
Tayler Wise singled to center to bring home Burger-Moore. Slater then scored on a wild pitch, but the Ephs were unable to generate any more runs in the inning.
Next up for the Ephs is a Sunday doubleheader vs. Bates that will be played at Colby College in Waterville, Maine with the first game starting at 10 AM.
