Schenectady, NY – In a tough out-of-conference road matchup, the Williams College Ephs (1-1) faced off against the #5 Union College Dutchmen (4-0). Union previaled 12-4.
The Ephs would be strong out of the gates, breaking the deadlock three minutes into the contest.
Pearse Glavin would locate
Spencer Goodbar who slotted home his third of the year. The Ephs remained defensively solid with goaltender
Matthew Freitas making six saves in the opening frame. The potent Union offense would not stay quiet for long, though, as they would fire two goals in quick succession. The Ephs would respond before the end of the quarter as
Spencer Goodbar would finish home his second of the game.
The second quarter would not be so kind to the Ephs, however, as they would lose all seven faceoffs in the frame. This deficiency would correlate to Union ball possession and five unanswered goals from the Dutchmen.
Pearse Glavin would claw one back for the Ephs with less than a minute remaining in the half to enter the locker room down four.
The two teams entered the third quarter with something to prove. The ball was possessed for periods by both teams, yet neither could take a significant advantage in the fifteen minutes.
Pearse Glavin would score his second of the game, but Union would match this tally and the third frame would end with Union up 8-4.
Unfortunately for the Ephs, Union was able to quiet the Ephs offense by simply keeping possession of the ball. The Dutchmen would make efficient work with the ball, registering sixteen shots in the fourth quarter and scoring on four of them. With the lead extended to seven, Williams looked to throw everything at the goal, but the Dutchmen goalie was able to stop all five Ephs' attempts. Union would tack one on late, winning the game 12-4.
Eph head coach
George McCormack said this following the game: "Tonight was a tough loss to a very strong team. We plan on learning from this and steadily improving as we go forward."
The Ephs head on the road again this Saturday as they face Colby College at 1PM.
