WILLIAMSTOWN, MASS – The Williams College Softball team (9-11/3-3 NESCAC) faced off against Tufts (23-2/7-0 NESCAC) today at Cole Field. Williams narrowly lost the first game of the day 4-3 after failing to recover from a strong showing by Tufts in the fourth inning, and the second ended with a 7-2 loss for the Ephs.
The first game, pitched by
Sadie Leonard, started off with no hits in the first two innings, but Tufts, with two outs in the top of the third, reversed that by scoring 4 times in rapid succession.
Taylor Wise provided the Ephs' first hit of the day in the bottom of the inning, but the team's first runs came in the fourth inning when
Ronni Ramos singled to right field, allowing both
Sydney Fleming and
Bailey Burger-Moore to score.
Burger-Moore provided the last run of the game with a home run in the sixth inning, leaving the Ephs behind by 1, despite Tufts' inability to score again after the third inning.
In the second game of the day the Jumbos gained more traction, scoring heavily in later innings to win by 5. The Ephs scored first in the second inning when
Adhya Tandon singled to right field, giving Burger-Moore the chance to score (and making it the senior's third run of the day).
The Ephs' last run of the day came in the bottom of the seventh when Vicky Balderas pinch ran for
Kaia Glickman, who'd been hit by a pitch; Balderas later advanced to home when Fleming grounded out to second.
"I thought there were a lot of great things about the doubleheader today, and we learned a lot," says Ephs Head Coach
Kris Herman. "Learning a lot is on our list of things to do every time out, practice or games.
"Of course we wanted to win, and that part is disappointing as I think we are talented enough to beat anybody. I look forward to tomorrow and to celebrating our seniors on Senior Day and winding it back up again."
Next up for the Ephs is a doubleheader at home tomorrow vs. Colby College (16-8/5-3 NESCAC) on Cole Field starting at 12 P.M.
