Ephs Defeated by No. 5 Tufts 7-6

Box Score WILLIAMSTOWN, MASS. – The Williams women's lacrosse team (10–3, 5–3 NESCAC) fell to the Tufts Jumbos (10–3, 6–2 NESCAC) 7-6 today on Farley-Lamb Field. Though the game was neck and neck throughout, the Jumbos closed out the scoring in the last 2 minutes of the final quarter, securing the win by 1 point. 

Starting off the first quarter, Anj Raman '24 went in goal for the Ephs while Courtney Kaufman went in goal for the Jumbos. Tufts scored the first goal of the game at 11:01 when Caroline Walter netted unassisted. 

After much back and forth between the two teams and a few shot attempts from the Ephs, Grace Collier '25 finally found the back of the net at 4:57, tying up the game at 1-1. At 1:12, Madeline Delaney took advantage of a free position shot to put Tufts ahead at 2-1 going into the second quarter.

At 10:43 in the second quarter, Isabel Arvelo '23 tied up the game at 2-2 with an unassisted goal. At 6:39, Tufts pulled ahead again when Margie Carden took advantage of a free position opportunity, putting the Jumbos at 3-2. With 31 seconds left in the first half, Ella Lesperance scored on another free position shot to bring Tufts to 4-2 going into halftime. 

Starting off the third quarter, Tufts' Madeline Delaney scored her second goal of the game at 13:09, increasing the Jumbos' lead to 3. The Ephs' Franny Donohue '26 responded by slotting home one of her own at 7:44, making it 5-3 in favor of Tufts. 

But Franny Donohue wasn't done yet — she netted again at 3:53, shrinking the Jumbos' lead to 1. Then, at 1:19, Isabel Arvelo scored her second goal of the game, tying it up at 5-5. 

The Ephs pulled ahead in the beginning of the fourth quarter when Grace Collier scored on a free position shot in a player-up situation, bringing Williams to 6-5. But at 8:08, Margie Carden netted unassisted for the Jumbos, tying up the game yet again at 6-6. 

With just 2:03 left in the game, Tufts got back on top when Allie Zorn found the back of the cage and gave the Jumbos a 7-6 lead, closing out the scoring for the game and securing the win for the Jumbos.



Tufts goalie Courtney Kaufman made 12 saves and allowed 6 goals, while Williams goalie Anj Raman made 8 saves and allowed 7 goals on the day.

"Today was a very competitive game. From the start, we came out hot — I think both teams did. Kudos to our defense, especially Anj," said head coach Alice Lee. "We're taking the lessons we learned today and looking ahead to the next one."

Next up for the Ephs is a home game against Wesleyan on Saturday at 1 p.m. for Senior Day.
