Box Score 2 WILLIAMSTOWN, MASS – The Williams College Softball team (11-13/5-5 NESCAC) faced Amherst College (19-11/7-5 NESCAC) today in a doubleheader on Cole Field. After losing the first game 4-1, the Ephs started with a strong offense in the first inning of the second game. They weren't able to keep that momentum up, though, ending with a 7-2 loss to the Mammoths.
In the first game, the Ephs struggled at the plate, earning their first hit only in the fourth inning when
Tayler Wise singled to left field.
Kayla Chang then bunted to the pitcher and advanced to third on an error, allowing Wise to score the Ephs' first run of the day.
Amherst scored once in the second inning and after scoring three runs in the third did not score again for the rest of the game. The Ephs' only other hits in the game, however, came when Wise singled to left field in the sixth and Kelly McGuigan singled up the middle in the seventh, and the team wasn't able to catch up to the Mammoths' early lead.
In the second game, the Ephs began by scoring twice in the first inning. Chang reached first on an error and advanced to second, and McGuigan doubled to right center.
Sydney Fleming then singled up the middle and advanced to third on an error, allowing both Chang and McGuigan to score.
Though the Ephs earned seven more hits over the course of the game, they did not score again. The Mammoths continued to score in the second, third, fourth, and fifth innings, and the game ended in a 7-2 loss.
"We did a lot of things well on both sides of the ball but couldn't string anything together," said Ephs head coach
Kris Herman. "Amherst, on the other hand, was able to take advantage of a few of our mistakes. We learned a lot though, and look forward to tomorrow."
Next up for the Ephs is an away doubleheader vs. Middlebury College (13-11/4-6 NESCAC) on Saturday, April 22nd at 1 P.M.
