Ephs Sweep Doubleheader from Middlebury

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MIDDLEBURY, VT – The Williams College Softball Team (13-13/NESCAC 7-5) faced Middlebury College (13-13/NESCAC 4-8) today in Middlebury, VT, the Ephs' first away doubleheader of the month. The first game was close, but the Ephs managed to win 3-2 thanks to two runs in the extra eighth inning. The second game of the day was marked by the Ephs' extremely strong offense; the team scored in five separate innings to end up on top 10-3.

In the first game, pitched impressively by Sadie Leonard, the Ephs' first run came in the third inning when Tayler Wise singled to center field and Sydney Fleming soon after reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Wise to score. The Panthers quickly scored themselves, bringing the game even at 1.

Neither team managed to score until the eighth inning. Kelly McGuigan first singled to right field, and Fleming singled to center field. Bailey Burger-Moore then singled through the left side. Next, Savannah Slater singled down the right field line and McGuigan scored. Vicky Balderas then reached on a fielder's choice and Fleming reached home, giving the Ephs a  3-1 lead.. The Panthers scored once in the bottom of the inning, and the game ended in a 3-2 victory for the Ephs.

The second game started out with both teams scoring heavily in the second inning, where the Ephs' earned their first four runs of the game. Burger-Moore and Ronni Ramos, the first two up to bat, both walked, and Vicky Balderas singled to left center. Sidney Miller then singled to the pitcher, allowing Burger-Moore to score. Successive hits by Wise, Kayla Chang, and McGuigan brought home Ramos, Balderas, and Miller.

McGuigan scored for a third time today in the fourth inning soon after tripling to right field, and Ramos and Balderas earned their second runs of the day in the fifth inning, raising the score to 7-3. The Ephs then scored in the sixth inning when Burger-Moore walked and Balderas doubled to left field. The team's last two runs of the day came in the seventh inning by Chang and McGuigan, who both scored on a single to right center by Balderas. The Panthers were unable to gain momentum after the second inning, and the Ephs won by 10-3.

"We had 28 hits today and our pitchers kept us in it all day," said Ephs head coach Kris Herman. "It was fun to keep the offense going, especially in game 2. We look forward to our final 8 games and heading into the postseason."

Next up for the Ephs is an away doubleheader vs. Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Wednesday in Troy, NY, with the first game starting at 3:30 PM.
