Ephs Downed by No. 6 Wesleyan University 15-7

Box Score WILLIAMSTOWN, MASS. — The Williams women's lacrosse team (10–4, 5–4 NESCAC) fell to the Wesleyan Cardinals (12–2, 7–2 NESCAC) today on the Ephs' home turf of Farley-Lamb Field. The Ephs scored the first 2 goals of the game, but the Cardinals went on to score 7 unanswered goals. Some key offensive players including Kendall Mittleman, Olivia Lai, and Chessy Greenwald took the Cardinals to the top. Wesleyan secured the win, though the Ephs made an impressive last-second goal, putting the final score at 15-7. 

To start the game, Anj Raman '24 went in goal for Williams while Abby Wolk went in goal for Wesleyan. The Ephs started off the scoring at 12:36 when Franny Donohue '26 netted off a pass from Katy McCullough '26, putting Williams up 1-0. At 7:39, Grace Collier '25 took advantage of a free position shot, increasing the Ephs' lead to 2. 

Wesleyan responded with a goal of its own at 4:51 when Annabel Cincotta found the back of the cage with an assist by Kendall Mittleman. The Ephs were now at 2-1. The Cardinals then tied it up at 2-2 when Chessy Greenwald scored off a pass from Kendall Mittleman with just 38 seconds left in the first quarter. 

Less than one minute into the second quarter, Wesleyan's Olivia Lai made a successful free position shot — the Cardinals pulled ahead 3-2. Keeping up the momentum, Chessy Greenwald scored again off a pass from Kendall Mittleman, putting Wesleyan at 4-2. 

But the Cardinals weren't done yet — at 12:42, Olivia Lai scored Wesleyan's fifth unanswered goal with an assist by Kendall Mittleman, bringing Wesleyan to 5-2. At 9:10, Kiara Tangney took advantage of a free position opportunity for the Cardinals and brought their lead up to 6-2. 

Almost 4 minutes later, Molly Greer followed suit, scoring her own free position goal for the Cardinals and taking them to 7-2. At 4:49, Anj Raman denied Wesleyan another free position opportunity. 

The Ephs put an end to the Cardinals' scoring streak when Franny Donohue took advantage of a player-up opportunity to score at 2:36, shrinking Wesleyan's lead to 4. The Cardinals responded with another goal when Kiara Tangney netted unassisted with 49 seconds left in the first half. Wesleyan was now up 8-3 going into halftime. 

To start the second half, Caroline Pratt '25 went in goal for the Ephs while Izzy Weintraub went in goal for the Cardinals. At 13:55, Wesleyan's Annabel Cincotta slotted one home and increased the Cardinals' lead to 6. In a player-up situation at 11:02, Claudia Russell '25 found the back of the cage herself, shrinking Wesleyan's lead back down to 5. 

Kendall Mittleman — who had 4 assists so far — scored a goal of her own at 6:05 during a player-up situation putting the Cardinals at 10-4. Sam DeLeo added to Wesleyan's lead at 3:34 — 11-5. With just under a minute left to go in the third quarter, Chessy Greenwald pulled off a hat trick during a free position opportunity — Wesleyan was at 12-4 going into the final quarter.

Molly Greer netted off a pass from Kendall Mittleman at 9:50, bringing the Cardinals to 13-4. Williams' leading scorer Franny Donohue responded by slotting one home at 9:11, shrinking Wesleyan's lead to 8. 

For the second half of the fourth quarter, Caitlyn Joyce '23 went in goal for the Ephs. With 4:27 left in the game, Olivia Lai pulled off a hat trick, netting off a pass from Kendall Mittleman and bringing Wesleyan to 14-5. 

Though the game belonged to the Cardinals at this point, Franny Donohue scored again for the Ephs with 1:02 left in the game, shrinking Wesleyan's lead to 8 again and scoring her 35th goal of the season. With 14 seconds left, Lindsey Diomede took advantage of a free position opportunity and brought Wesleyan to 15-6.

In the final second of the game, Isabel Arvelo '23 netted unassisted, closing out the scoring for the contest with Wesleyan winning 15-7. 



Wesleyan goalie Abby Wolk made 3 saves and allowed 3 goals and Izzy Weintraub made 2 saves and allowed 4 goals, while Williams goalie Anj Raman made 2 saves and allowed 8 goals, Caroline Pratt made no saves and allowed 5 goals, and Caitlyn Joyce made no saves and allowed 2 goals on the day. 

Next up for the Ephs is a conference matchup against the Middlebury Panthers in Middlebury, Vt. on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
