Ephs Fall to Mammoths In Close Battle 5-4

Williamstown, MA - To start off the rainy Sunday, the Ephs faced off against Amherst for their last match of Senior Weekend in a match played indoors in Lansing Chaoman Rink. After a close battle in doubles, the Ephs fought hard in singles but fell just short of a win at 5-4. Head Coach Anik Cepeda says, "They battled hard today. It's always a tricky adjustment going from our outdoor courts to our indoor courts —  we thought they found their rhythm later in singles play. They had a couple of good chances."

Number one doubles Katherine Orgielewicz and Yuu Ishikawa dominated on their doubles court today, crushing their opponents 8-2. Number two doubles Jane Ladaga and Ananya Aggarwal fought hard to stay in the match, nearly taking it to a tiebreak, but unfortunately in the end the Mammoths were too strong and they could not bounce back after their missed points, and in the end lost 8-6. After number three doubles also lost, the Ephs found themselves behind 2-1 overall.

The pressure mounted as singles went underway, with the Ephs having to take at least five of the six matches to win. Number one Orgielewicz went down in the first set, but she bounced back with great focus and grit, finding her opponent's weaknesses, and dominating the second set 6-1. Number two singles Ishikawa similarly dropped the first set in a close set-tiebreak, but she made some adjustments and found her rhythm in the second set sweeping her opponent 6-0. Unfortunately the Mammoths fought back and Orgielewicz and Ishikawa lost the third set. Number three Mia Thomann also lost her first set, and though she fought hard in the second to bring the set to a tiebreak, she lost 10-5.

Number four and first year Annabelle Siegel played impressive tennis today, handling her opponent's hard hitting in straight sets, and giving the Ephs the first singles win of the day. At number six singles Ladaga was unstoppable today, finding her groove in the first set to take it 6-4 and sweeping through the second set 6-1. Unfortunately, it was not enough for the Ephs to take the win today, and they lost 5-4. Number five Aggarwal had an incredible battle today, taking the first set handily at 6-3. However, her opponent stepped up her game to win the second set in a close set-tiebreak. In the third set tiebreak, Aggarwal stayed calm and focused, winning 10-7. It was a tough tiebreaker, because at that point the Ephs had already lost. But, Aggarwal used her teammate's energy to end the day with a win for Williams.

Coach Cepeda added, "I hope the squad walks home feeling proud of themselves and how much they've grown individually and collectively this season. Their evolution has been inspiring! This match will serve as fuel and fire during post season play, no doubt."
