TROY, NY – Today, the Williams College Softball Team (14-14/7-5 NESCAC) faced Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (26-6) in an away doubleheader. The Ephs won the first game, pitched impressively by
Sadie Leonard, by a remarkable 11-1. However, they lost their offensive momentum in the second game and lost 12-0.
The Ephs scored in nearly every inning of the first game, starting in the second inning when
Sydney Fleming singled to center field and later advanced to home on a single to center from
Sidney Miller. Fleming scored again in the fourth inning when she launched a home run to left center, and hits by
Kayla Chang,
Ronni Ramos, and
Kaia Glickman provided the other 3 runs of the inning. The Ephs led 5-0.
Fleming had her third hit of the day in the fifth inning, doubling to right center and giving
Tayler Wise, who'd singled to left field and advanced to third on a fielding error, the chance to score. After the Ephs scored twice more in the top of the sixth, the Engineers notched their first run of the day in the bottom of the inning.
The Ephs finished off the game with 3 more runs in the seventh inning.
Bailey Burger-Moore singled to right field, and Ramos doubled to left field. Miller then singled down the left field line, allowing both her teammates to score. Miller then stole second and scored when
Lauren Haywood singled to left field.
Rensselaer brought a new offensive determination to the second game of the day, tallying 6 in runs in the first inning and 2 more in the second. The Ephs struggled at the plate, and though they managed 4 hits, the team wasn't able to score. The Engineers rounded out the day with 4 runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, and the game ended early via the 8-run rule.
"Today was a lot of good stuff and some tough bounces as well," said Ephs head coach
Kris Herman. "Rensselaer had been undefeated for weeks, so it was fun to dominate in Game 1. We're shorthanded due to illness and injury, and everyone came together and battled."
The Ephs return home to Cole Field this Saturday at 12 P.M. for a conference doubleheader against Trinity College.
