Box Score SALISBURY, MD — Today, the Williams College Softball team (23-15) played their first game of the 2023 NCAA Championship against the UMass Dartmouth Corsairs (30-13) since winning the NESCAC title last Sunday.
Neither team scored until the fifth inning, when the Ephs scored the only run of the game. Thanks to
Sadie Leonard's strong pitching which featured thirteen strikeouts, the Corsairs were prevented from scoring and the game ended in a 1-0 victory for the Ephs.
To start off the game, first-at-bat
Tayler Wise singled through the left side in the bottom of the first inning, and
Bri Kang later singled to first base in the third. The Ephs' run, though, came in the bottom of the fifth inning, when
Bailey Burger-Moore singled to left field and
Adhya Tandon was next hit by a pitch, advancing Burger-Moore to second.
Ronni Ramos and
Tayler Wise then each reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Burger-Moore the opportunity to score.
The Ephs earned four hits over the course of the game, and Leonard gave up only two to the Corsairs, securing a 1-0 victory. With the win, her 17th of the season, Leonard now shares the Eph single season record for most wins with Rebecca Duncan '20.
"It was a great team win," said Ephs head coach
Kris Herman. "Sadie pitched great,
Tayler Wise set the tone with a hit to lead off the game, and
Bailey Burger-Moore came through with a hit and the run late in the game."
"It was a beautiful day and a ton of fun to get an NCAA win."
Next up, the Ephs face top-seeded Salisbury University tomorrow at 11 A.M.
