Box Score 2 LEWISTON, ME – Today, the Williams College Softball team (19-15/12-6 NESCAC) faced Bates College (15-16-1/7-11 NESCAC) in their final doubleheader of the regular season. After an uneventful start, the first game took a surprise turn when the Ephs scored eight times in the extra eighth inning to win 9-1. Despite seven hits in the second game, the Ephs scored only twice and lost 3-2.
In the first game, pitched beautifully by
Sadie Leonard (who gave up only 1 run (unearned) and struck out 18 Bobcats over the eight innings, neither team scored until the sixth inning when Kelly McGuigan homered down the left field line. Bates responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning, bringing the score to 1-1. The game went into extra innings, and the Ephs came out in force.
Bri Kang first singled to left field, and
Sydney Fleming homered to center field. Vicky Balderas then reached first on a fielder's choice and
Bailey Burger-Moore doubled down the right field line, advancing Balderas to third. Next,
Adhya Tandon bunted and both Balderas and Burger-Moore (on an error by the pitcher) scored.
Lauren Haywood, pinch hitting for
Ronni Ramos, then singled through the right side and
Tayler Wise reached first on another error by the Bobcats.
Kayla Chang reached first and Tandon got out on a fielder's choice at third base, and
Sidney Miller then singled to left field, advancing to second on the throw and allowing both Wise and Ramos (pinch running for Haywood) to score. Finally, Fleming doubled to center field and both Miller and Chang scored, giving the Ephs an 8-run lead. Bates didn't score in the bottom of the inning and the game ended 9-1.
In the second game, the Ephs scored first in the third inning. Kang, first up to bat, doubled to left center. Ramos then bunted and Wise singled up the middle, giving the Ephs their first run of the game when Kang advanced to home. Chang next singled up the middle and Fleming singled through the left side, allowing Wise to score.
Bates scored once in the bottom of the third and twice more in the fourth, and despite their offensive strength in the first game, the Ephs were unable to score again in the second, finishing at 3-2 by the end of the seventh inning.
Next up, the Ephs await the NESCAC Office release of the NESCAC Tournament seedlings.The Tufts Jumbos will host the tournament May 12-14.
