WILLIAMSTOWN, MASS. – Marc Mandel's Men's Williams Varsity 1 Crew that successfully defended the IRA DIII national title they won in in 2022 and the Eph Varsity 2 that won the first IRA DIII Varsity 2 race this spring at the IRA Championships had 18 members honored for academic excellence.
The 18 Ephs listed below were honored as 2023 Empacher-IRCA Scholar Athletes.
To be honored each athlete must have completed one full year at the institution heading into the season. First years are not eligible. Meaning current rising sophomores are not eligible.
1) Each must have a cumulative GPA of 3.35 (no rounding is permitted).
2) Be recognized as a varsity letter winner. This criterion is at the discretion each athletic department and how each institution recognizes "letter-winners".
"Our athletes never cease to amaze me with their ability to balance the demands of their coursework with training for rowing," stated Mandel. "More impressive than their GPAs is the level of engagement they have in their academic areas of focus and the relationships they build with their professors."
