Williamstown, MA – As it was the Ephs' last home match in Lasell Gymnasium tonight, we celebrated the incredible collection of seniors on the the Eph roster. Prior to facing off against Vermont State University Castleton, the Williams community paid their respects to the unified and competitive environment that the seniors created for the wrestling team this year. After the celebrations concluded, the Ephs faced off against a top ranked team in Castleton University. While the Ephs fell to their opponents in the end, they put up a commendable fight and created a great sporting atmosphere in Lasell.
Tonight, the Ephs faced stiff competition, and in doing so displayed an immense amount of persistence and spirit.
Caleb Seyfried and
Henry Forte's bouts at 149 and 165 respectively really emphasized the tenacity within the Williams wrestling team.
Caleb Seyfreid's match, despite being low scoring was full of back-and-forth action. Out of the gate, Seyfried scored a takedown that sparked the crowd within Lasell. After a rough start to the dual meet, he got the fans involved by securing an early advantage. Both Seyfried and his opponent Elijah Cyr put on a highly technical and closely contested match. Unable to hold onto his lead, Seyfried fell behind 3-4 as he was taken down by Cyr. Not long after, the bout was tied at 4-4, but due to a late escape point by Cyr, Seyfried fell 5-4 in a thrilling display.
Later in the dual at 165, Forte secured the Ephs only win of the night. As soon as the first period began, Forte took charge of the match with unrelenting pressure. He impressed with his ability to earn near fall points after taking his opponent down. Scoring a total of 8 near fall points along with earning a series of takedowns helped Forte cruise to yet another victory.
Here is what Eph head coach
Scott Honecker had to say about today's performance: "These boys have stayed the course through a tough dual meet season. They've kept the right attitude, controlled the things they can control, and steadily improved. I'm excited for them to cash in their hard work, discipline, and smart preparation in 2 weeks."
As Coach Honecker mentioned, the Ephs are keeping their eyes on the March 2, the Northeast Regional, where they can showcase all the effort put in this year. But before then, the Williams Wrestlers will attend the Futures Invitational in Springfield, MA. on February 25. Tune in as the Ephs close out their regular season.
